Wait really?

It's not a Pentium, i3's are Hyperthreaded. They're usually on par in games with the entire FX lineup, to say nothing of a cheap Athlon.

That said, I agree that with the budget constraints in mind, the OP may end up with a smarter gaming system by going with the Athlon and buying a better video card. CPUs tend to get too much credit around here.

If we want to talk about real IPC, then maybe this will wake you up.

VT2aU4p.png

My CPU is much faster than any 860k even if it was clocked at 5ghz, yet it bottlenecks the GTX 580 because it does not have the single threaded performance of a superior intel chip.

The i3 has IPC and threads, and doing so beats even the FX 6300 which in turn is faster than an 860k.

Dude, no it isn't. The IPC of the FX-series is garbage. The X4 860K has a higher IPC than the 6300 and so has better single-threaded performance, not to mention it having 4 full cores rather than 6 'modules'.

It has better floating point performance in AVX given that they went from a coupled 128bit unit to a coupled 256bit unit. It still uses the module approach though. Along with improvements in scheduling & branch operations.

On average in games the 6300 is still superior.

But the 860K is cheap and cheerful and is better than the 4300.

A review for the R9 380 4GB from XFX, looks great TBH :)

It performs great too.

Nice to see they remembered how to make coolers :)

The 7900 series ones were quite lame despite looking nice

Using an i3-4150, 8GB of ram and a HD7950 (equiv to R9 280) I can get 60fps at almost all ultra on GTAV and BF4, (shadows at high) GPU is over clocked.

Most modern games love 4 cores than they do single core performance, some games won't even run with dual cores.

You are forgetting that i3 has hyperthreading. The game treats it as it has 4 cores.reatinghyperth

An 860k is slower than my Phenom II CPU and that bottlenecks my GTX 580, seriously your info is wrong.

no its not. your b55 is 2 cores 45nm 3ghz. the 860k is 4 cores 4ghz 28nm. get your facts right!

Yes, but the "budget build" people do on youtube have no upgradability. I guess he could max get a GTX 950 before a bottleneck occurs. With an i3 you could always pick up an better i5 later on.

which would instantly melt a 30$ h81 board. intel is just more expensive!

My B55 is 4 at 4.153ghz LOL,

then you got the x4 but its still 45nm. its ridiculous to say its faster than a 4ghz 28nm cpu that is overclockable too.

just look at the difference between the single core performance between the 860k and the i3. and thats just from 28nm to 22nm.

My chip is faster than an 860k even at 5ghz, you seen the FX 4100 series? even at 5.5ghz they are slower.

The x4 860k cannot even be compared to an i3, the i3 is even better or equal to a FX 8350 in gaming. they are not even on the same planet.

Plus its like 2x the price, how can you dare to compare two completely different products.

That's a good list. I might suggest to go with a non-modular PSU and get a better case instead. Also, A3I7BL wanted r7 270.

4100 series were quite horrible chips, they perform a lot worse than bulldozer and the new Athlons have even better IPC. I seriously doubt that your phenom II outperforms a new Athlon. If you still think so i would like to see some benchmarks.

Edit: What phenom is it? It may perform better in gaming because the athlon does not have l3 cache, which gives maybe 10-12% boost in gaming

As said, the fx 4100 performs worse than the athlon. This says nothing to me. AFAIK the athlon is also a "true" quad core compared to the modules of the fx.
