MSI workstation boards for Intel Skylake Xeons

MSI's introduction into the workstation segment, starts out with 2 of their newest workstation motherboards. Called MSI Workstation C236A and MSI Workstation C236M. Both of these boards runs on the Intel server C236 chipset, supporting Intel Skylake Xeon processors, along with Celeron, Pentium and Core i3. 64GB of ECC DDR4, but only at 2133MHz, due to chipset limitation. The C236A can do 3-way CFX and 2-way SLI, with PCIe lanes at x16, x16/x4, x8/x8/x4. 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports, a M.2, that can be converted to a U.2 connector for nvme drives, with their optional adapter. On the back, it's got  both a PS/2 keyboard and mouse port. USB 3.1 type C Gen 2, USB 3.1 type A Gen 1, standard audio jacks for the Realtek ALC1150 audio codec. Intel gigabit lan, and your typical video out put connectors, HDMI, DVI, and VGA.

Going to their 2nd board, the C236M, supports 2-way CFX at x16/x4 or a single gpu at x16. It's got 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports with 2 of them part of SATA Express, and Realtek ALC1150 audio codec. At the rear it has PS/2 keyboard and mouse combo port. 6x USB type A with 2x 2.0 and 4x 3.1 at Gen 1 speeds. gold plated audio jacks, clear CMOS button, and Realtek gigabit lan.

Wow I've never, EVER seen an MSI workstation motherboard before. Glad to see that they're now entering that prosumer market where us prosumers buy hardware that's optimized and/or certified for our tasks we do in those industries.

Give it up for MSI for making gamer looking server boards.

99% of server boards look like crap. some of us still like Xeons, but don't like the looks of a ugly server boards. MSI has answer our wishes, what's wrong with that?

In this case workstation boards, at least they did it right by using a server chipset.

It's been scientifically proven that red does make your rig go faster.

What I'm wondering is why they wrote "Workstation" on the board. Are they worried people will forget?

I meant congratulations, it looks great. Nothing wrong in making a computer component look good. I like it.

It looks like their SLI Krait series motherboards, I think they look bad ass.

Agree. One LAN port is a joke. It is not a workstation board full stop. Xeon support is nice though.

Price? How is the support for GPU's? Are xeons still going to be viable over i5's and i7's that's the question.

A Xeon is basically a locked, underclocked i7. Or a hypethreaded i5 that cost the same as an i5 (roughly).

I am not talking about those Xeons that has like more than 10 cores with <2.5GHz low clock frequency.

I was considering the E3 1231v3 Xeon over the i7 4770K, it was a good value but then Skylake came out. They are really good for budget gaming or as a workstation that can game too (and doesn't cost more than the unlocked Core i7).

yes, I know. But skylake xeons don't support consumer chipsets, only these. So I am interested in the price.

The Asus one uses the C232 chipset, so it has less lanes than the C236. 8 lanes on the C232 vs 20 lanes on the C236.

I really hope to see more and more workstation boards.  Especially these MSI ones.  A bit more USB, and pair of Intel nic's and this would be amazing *_*
