Skylake or No Lake?

Hey everyone, It's been too many years and I don't even know what CPU Generation we're on anymore (Skylake right?).

 

Anyways, I currently have a 2500k, But I do a ton of pro work and it just chugs. 3DS MAX, Premier, etc, and I want better clock performance.

 

I was looking at the 6600K, but my god they're expensive. Is there another CPU of the same tier for skylake that doesn't OC or costs less? It's currently double what I paid for my 2500k 5 years ago.

 

Also, if I go for a 6600k will I need DD4 as well?

You should stick with your 2500K, if you want to upgrade the only reasonable path would be to save up for 6700K or 5820K, 6600K is not that much of an upgrade

right, I'll look @ 5820k pricing as the bloody 6700k is so expensive already lol. Does 2011 3 still do DD3 or is it also DDR 4 now?

if you wanted a relatively cheap upgrade i'd get a H97 board and a Xeon E3-1231 V3, as it's cheaper than skylake and you don't need to get DDR4 memory.

Define "chug"? My workload isn't the same as yours, but I'm not struggling with my 2500k. The most cost effective thing I'd do if you needed more power would be to source a 2600k or 2700k off Ebay. I say unless you have cash to burn or really need to build a new system, you're not really gaining anything from Sandy Bridge in any substantial way to justify the cost of the platform change.

Actually some members on this forum managed to make DDR3 work but that requires tempering(voltage related tempering)...

If I were you I'd look at something like the Xeon E3 1231V3, on lga 1150, it's basically a locked i7 without the onboard graphics, and you could keep your DDR3.

Kaby Lake still won't reach 5820K in performance, so that's a reasonable path imo.
