it wasn't. The only reason w8 was a fail is because people hate change. It wasn't miserable at all.

No, Windows 8 was pretty terrible. There was no incentive to upgrade from 7 at all. 8.1 made the issue tolerable, but 8 itself was an objectively terrible OS, on par with Vista.

no... they couldn't. This was a problem with third party apps, meaning the MS devs have no control over it.

"Windows 9" =/= "Windows9" for example, also the name on the box doesn't have to match the name in the OS files exactly, the 95 98 thing just aligned with their marketing goals.

I upgraded from 7 on release and didn't see a single problem with it. 8.1 just made it a TON better than 7.

The real reason is a marketing trick, it makes 7 and 8 seem older than they actually are, all marketing is psychological manipulation (they could have fixed the windows 98/95 thing behind the scenes)

How could they fix the Windows 95/98 thing behind the scenes? Do you think that Microsoft has access to the code of every single program in the world written for Windows? And that they could modify that code and somehow replace all the programs on our computers with the modified code?

Because internal programming had that name occupied already from Windows 95 and Windows 98. They had programming that named it Windows 9 or something, so compatibility mode would be out the window. Excuse the bad pun.

Name on the box =/= to name in the code (for windows 9 or rather what became 10), problem solved, or just put or remove a space in the "Windows 9" string it's not difficult.

some dumb programs saw the "9" and would think "must be windows 98" and then problems happen

Yes, it was a great OS in a sense, for example if you had a laptop with a touch screen then it would've been enjoyable. It was hell to use otherwise, 8.1 was an improvement but still it was something more suitable for a tablet

Yes, if Microsoft wants to bring continuum to life that's the only way they can do it.

no it wasn't hell to use lmao. You could disable metro with a single click on desktop and install start menu's, which I didn't even do. Overall interface of w8/w8.1 was so much better than 7, not to mention faster OS overall, especially on boot.

I see what you mean. But I also see why they wouldn't want to remove a space, as that would introduce inconsistency not just within the current OS but also compared to previous OS versions. I agree that marketing probably played the largest role.

edit: Also, removing a space might not cover all the bases. Maybe someone used if(version.contains("9")), although that would be cringeworthy code.

I only say this as they obviously wanted to name it 10, might have to do with OSX being a thing, but yes it kills two birds with one stone.

Yes, if Microsoft wants to bring continuum to life that's the only way they can do it.

continuum has nothing to do with having no more windows versions

it's about universal apps and seamless workflow from one device to the other

sticking to one version will make it much much easier either way.
