it's true. game developers get 0 money from used games. it's one of the reason why xbox one didn't have used game support when it was first announced. excuse or not it's true.

I know its true, its true for used car sales too.

 

Would you knick a second hand Ford Escort using the excuse that its ok because Ford does not get any of the money from its sale?

a car is made from finite materials that have value. a digital game is made of .... qbits or something. And to that extent would i DOWNLOAD a car plan and proceed to 3d print it? YES. People need to understand that digital goods need and should be treated differently from real goods.

a car is made from finite materials that have value. a digital game is made of .... qbits or something. And to that extent would i DOWNLOAD a car plan and proceed to 3d print it? YES. People need to understand that digital goods need and should be treated differently from real goods.

A digital game still has value. Furthermore, there is the physical value of the disc it's printed on (Granted, that's very low value).

 

The whole point of used game sales isn't that you're lining GameStop's pockets, but rather, that you're paying the original owner of the game. GameStop has taken an industry that would exist regardless, and made it streamlined for the 2nd hand buyer. No need to hunt through forum posts and used-game ads to find that 2nd hand game you want.

 

If you don't want GameStop to make any money, then eliminate the middle man, and buy your used games directly from someone who is selling them. You'd likely get them cheaper than what GameStop sells, and the original owner would make more than GameStop would pay-out. A win-win situation, assuming both the buyer and seller have the time to do all of that.

it's true. game developers get 0 money from used games. it's one of the reason why xbox one didn't have used game support when it was first announced. excuse or not it's true.

 

Yeah 0....except for the used copy that had to be necessarily sold as new...

 

Look enough apologizing for devs, they can either make a compelling game people want to sink a lot of hours into and keep or lower their fucking prices for games that offer 6 hours of content yet want to charge 60 USD.

i'm not saying the used game market has a place or not. the guy i replied to was trying to says that it's better for developers to buy a used game than to pirate it which ir argued is the same as in both cases the dev sees no money.

Just an FYI guy, the WEBKIT exploit will be the same one they used on the Wii U too.

While it does work (on older firmwares, the exploit is long patched) it requires a fairly hefty back end to work.

You need a PC acting as a webserver and to host the ISOs, you then navigate to the webserver ip address on the console, click a link to run the exploit, reboot the web browser, go back to the webserver, select your ISO then on the Wii U you have to run Smash Bros, the WEBKIT exploit then uses the gamesave of Smash to access the kernel mode space and launch the ISO instead of Smash.

Yes it works but it's a huge pain in the arse, requires a PC running somewhere, requires a game with an exploitable save and requires a Ethernet connection to stream the ISO to the console, don't even think about trying it with WiFi.

The consoles store their OS on a small solid state chip soldered to the motherboard (which is why you don't need to reinstall ps4 os if you swap out the hdd). I doubt it has enough capacity for a whole desktop os like windows

There's no reason why you can't install onto the HDD then boot something like GRUB or even Clover from an EFI partition to boot the actual OS.

I don't think cheating is limited to jailbroken devices, in the past they could be loaded from USB drives without jailbreaks. My console friends all did this on ps3s and x360s to unlock items exclusively available for preorders, certian retailers, or to unlock microtransaction "dlc." I think this is more for development without paying Sony, or unbanning a device, workarounds for 'always on' online requirements, installing custom programs (maybe even alternate OS) or using the hardware in chain as a computing server as seen PS4s stacked in the movie Chapie (really great movie by the way). The more complicated stuff that pertains to altering the console, altering a game doesn't necessarily need an altered console.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

Huh, so people can back games up now. Shame that they are so large that not many of them fit on the 1 HDD....unlike Original Xbox games which have 50 fitting on a 160GB HDD.......

when you have a texture resolution so shit you can barely differ a potatoe from a rock, then yes... you can stick 50 games in 160GB

I actually want to see it too. I discovered Free60 yesterday, and now I'm excited to load Linux on my XB360 lol.

 

GPU drivers though?

It might be a little weird since I'm not sure how Sony/AMD allocates the VRAM vs the system RAM, but if that gets sorted out then the open source 3rd party driver should work.

Digital pirating is only a loss to developers if they can somehow prove the person who pirated the game would have bought it if they couldn't have pirated it.
Actual theft of a hard copy of anything is a provable loss because they now have one less of it to sell.

Now can we please get back to how neat this is? This reminds me of back in the day Bill Gates thought people modding their Original Xboxs was cool, although I doubt Sony will think this is cool because all Asian tech/gaming companies always seem to have sticks partially lodged in their rectums. Microsoft these days would also not think it's cool if someone modded the Xbone. The early 2000s was a pretty good and wacky era in the gaming industry.
