Intel has released a statement on Intel Skylake CPUs bending when being having to deal with to much pressure from aftermarket coolers: http://www.legitreviews.com/intel-releases-statment-on-bent-skylake-cpus_175944

The sad thing is that they're basically like "well its not our fault we're perfect"

You need to read this: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/11724-read-before-posting-in-this-section/

Makes sense.  It's not their fault that 1%(if even) of CPU coolers don't adhere to the specifications Intel presented.  Nearly every major cooling vendor has no issue.  Of course if you bang the case, or drop it--it'll likely break off from a large heatsink but that is with -any- socket.

BTW, the new Skylake ships are as bad as the old Athlons where you could easily crush them if it wasn't for the four pads close to the corners.

it is that easy, wtf intel

They didn't make the Athlons more rigid, they just made it harder for the coolers to damage/crush the die. Intel just needed to use a thicker substrate, just like they did with previous CPU. I only expect mobile CPU to have substrates as thin as what the desktop Skylake parts are using.

so pretty much someone decided it would be fine and added any other problems to the margin of error that always happens, got it, I wonder who made that choice

So short version: is there like a list of affected coolers or its just a crap shot and it can happen with any of them?

Either that or they decided that it was a smart idea to save money by using thinner substrate.

I'd say its a crap shoot. Though I think coolers that use clips not screws will be less likely to bend Skylake chips.

Edit: Although with platforms such as Haswell and Penryn, you always wanted to use coolers that were mounted using screws as clips don't provide enough pressure for optimal contact.

I want to see actual data on how many CPUs are warping and what coolers were used and how tightened said coolers were..

I remember to much presure on my i7 920 on my x58 motherboard made system boot with 1 or 2 sticks of ram instead of 3, no need for that much of presure, kinda learned the hard way although kinda already knew, lets take watercooling fittings if you overtighten them you damage o rings causing leaks eventually, if you fit them just fine you're good.

Still bend cpu thats something completly new makes me wonder if can happen even with 5xxx range hasswell-e.

It depends on whether or not Intel skimped on the substrate.

Also, just comparing my Celeron M380, Phenom II P920, the random LGA775 CPU that I picked up Pentium 4 631, my Pentium III 667 and my borked i5 4440, all use a substrate of the same thickness. (I'd include my Celeron 433A but its, well, old, got a far thicker substrate and based on Pentium II).

I was planning on buying a I5 6600K, should I not buy one now? I'ma be getting a smaller cooler like the CM Hyper 212 EVO. Will this bend my chip? I'm a bit pissed off about this. What causes this and can I prevent it as long as I'm not a dumb ass when mounting the CPU?
