So Apparntly Nvidia GeForce Drivers are killing off some laptop panels (More accurately EDID Units)

Master Disaster

They use the $100 as toilet paper and the $50 as tissue paper.

I bet those would be superb for origami folding (yes, I actually care).... I'm glad I ordered from intel!

(jk jk on the toilet paper, though it would be pretty nice if the tissue part was true).

Just a though, I see these laptops, or gaming laptops in general, constantly marketed with Nvidia GPU's. Do they even have an AMD option?

For the most part right now Nvidia is a better choice on battery powered devices because Maxwell 2.0 has lower power consumption under load than GCN 1.2

In desktops it's not really significant but in gaming laptops it matters.

Whoops maybe Dell built in a killswitch that's being triggered prematurely? :P I highly doubt it's that, but they wouldn't be the first electronics manufacturer to do something stupid like that.

My guess would be that Nvidia have gone silent because it would be silly to say anything and possibly admit liability for the issues before they have fully identified the issue themselves.

I bet you if they wanted Dell could be a real arse about this issue if its identified as an a Dell issue "ohh you used another driver not on the driver DVD therfor it was not tested by us and we wont do anything".

Go graphics cards! At least AMD solved theirs in a very short time. But I do wonder, are all of these laptops, gsync laptops? Or just normal ones? Either way, sounds like a hardware issue, which a driver might not fix. Maybe a firmware fix?

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field

Yeah, let's talk about the range of the different issues then. We're talking about a problem first reported in August (according to original post) vs a problem that occurred since a recent release of a new software...

Just goes to show that anyone is able to make mistakes.

Sorry but squeaky wheel gets the grease. Yes we should demand better but after issues happen companies will do as much as it might affect their bottom line.

Remember that fight club scene: if the cost of settling potential lawsuits is less than the cost of a recall, they won't do one.

The community has already worked out how to fix the issue.

Basically you have to fit a new panel, boot into Linux with the new panel fitted, run a EDID flash tool, grab the current EDID firmware, hotswap the panel then execute the flash procedure with the borked panel fitted and no screen to see what your doing. This reflashes the EDID Unit on the borked panel with the firmware from the working panel and hey presto, everything works again.

They're not gonna burn anything, they have however skimped on the material used in Skylake motherboards so much that some larger fans are now in danger of snapping boards (or at least causing stress fractures)
