This Is What Happened To LTT

GodSpoon

So @Scia made a post I'm sure many of you saw, titled “What happened to LTT?”

And he went through and explained what he saw happening to Linus Tech Tips as it became more of a company than a small youtube channel.

He mentioned the increased video quality, but with more ads, a different targeted audience, the more laid back WAN show and so on and so on.

This honestly just made me step back and take a look at LTT for myself.

I’ve been watching LTT ever since they reviewed the old Asus Transformer TF101 and I was hooked ever since.

There was just something about the channel that made me love watching the videos. Linus was always funny and unscripted, there was a ton of dumb teenager humor, they generally gave a pretty thorough oververview of what the products were, and I enjoyed the products they covered.

But as time moved on and LTT grew, so did its content and so did I.

They started scripting and doing more B-Roll content after the new-old office, in-video ads started coming around and the company changed. But the old humor and LTT content I enjoyed stuck around. I felt like the things I loved were still there.

Now LTT is at the new office, Vessel is a thing as well as more structured content (Scrapyard Wars) and the demographic has changed as more youth are watching his content.

In this light I started to see the things I preferred in the old videos.

The content isn’t as thorough as it used to be, as well as being less unscripted and spontaneous.

Split episodes make up a good chunk of the content, Linus makes sex jokes in every video and vessel is weird.

But then I realized; I don't really care that much :P

Lots of people DO like the content they are putting out right now.

There are hundreds of reasons to prefer it over the old content.

The humor is still there, if not more than it was, and they still cover the products I want covered, albeit less thorough.

The more “show” oriented content is awesome, even if it takes time to produce, as well as the disorganized and just honest fun we get to see from Luke and Linus that makes the WAN show, the WAN show!

Just because LTT isn't exactly what we want, and isn’t the same as it was 5 years ago, is no reason to dislike and be butthurt about it.

Linus Tech Tips has changed as a whole, there are hundreds of new people watching, learning from and enjoying the content they put out, wether its perfect or not.

I know I will be continuing to watch the content they put out, wether its targeted for a younger audience than me or not. And no matter what they make, there are always going to be people who like something different, or prefer the way it used to be.

But they can’t make everyone happy.

But hey what do I know

Thanks for reading

My bad, I blame word :P

Better?

Very much so. When you paste from another program, use Ctrl + Shift + V to "Paste as plain text" and it will remove all formatting (including font color).

Or right click and click "Paste as plain text". I find it super useful.

Also, generally good post. You write it from the perspective of someone who enjoys their current content. I personally do not and do not share your view. Still, good post tho.

Great Contribution

I don't enjoy random sex jokes most of the time. I'm looking weekly shows that are on time without technical difficulties and discuss details about some subjects in-depth.

LTT is just... not that. At all.

For example: That Ek all in one review was basically reading off of a spec sheet. The temperature chart was totally useless. The overclocking guides are too surface-level. There's a lot of nuance that's there which don't get covered. I don't really care about good lighting or spectacularly framed shots. I want to leave being as educated as if I read forum posts and in-depth guides. (It's not like Tek Syndicate is any better, for example. So I'm not saying LTT is the bottom of the barrel or something.)

I know this isn't the direction Linus said he was going for anyways. He wants a technology channel, more general, more fun. Not what I'm looking for. His humor seems to attract fans that well... you know. Are younger and less mature than some other places. Which is fine, people of all types need their own place to hang out. Not usually for me though.

Ads don't really bother me. I think to say that advertising doesn't influence opinions (as Jayz adamantly stated) is stupid. You give lollipops to doctors as a pharmacy giant pitching a drug, higher chance it'll get chosen. A lot of time and money and mental effort gets saved when a company gets you some product to review. Hardware reviewers rely on them. But what other way is there to do it? Hardware is expensive. That's just the Youtube Hardware game. Not Linus' fault, and I think he's trying to remain neutral. It's not the ads for me. I can sit through the ads. it's the core content. Linus' idea to pitch ads after the content in most videos is smart and considerate.

I really don't care about Linus or Luke or whoever. I don't understand people who keep regurgitating Linus memes, but whatever.

I kind of agree with you OP. I've been watching for a long time. (Before that Asus transformer book video) I still like their content. Sure, it's heavily scripted and that can sometimes be kind of boring and the jokes doesn't feel like jokes, due to them being scripted (and somewhat immature, but that doesn't bother me). So my only complaint would be the scripts. I don't think they should get rid of them completely though since it's good for Linus and Luke to not get facts wrong. But at the same time, I feel like they should make keywords instead of an entire script and kind of improvise to make jokes and such feel more natural.

Though, I do understand that this is something that may be hard to do since they have to produce a lot of videos to stay alive and I'm not sure they can handle having to do a lot of retakes because of laughter etc for saying something stupid.

So, even though it feels less natural than it was before, I understand it and the actual content is still good and I trust the LMG crew to make stuff honestly and that they are not "bought" by for example Nvidia as some people tend to suggest.

Also, for the natural fun stuff with real jokes, I watch CSF which is awesome. Therefore, I sort of get my natural fun and jokes from there and a more serious LTT videos. Which is fine by me. I just wish there were more CSF every week.

EDIT: And also, ads are fine. They need them to stay alive and I need them to stay alive for my tech content. Therefore I'm fine with watching a 15 sec (or 5 when they are skipable) ad before each clip and as the ads in their videos are mostly at the end I can just close the video if I'm not interested. Therefore I'm fine with the ads

LTT is just... not that. At all.

I guess since you brought it up, I'll talk about it too. Even though I have before.

What makes LTT different from every other tech reviewer on the Internet? Seriously? "He's Linus. He's a character [as in someone who is interesting to watch be themselves]."

Well that's not good enough for me anymore. It hasn't been for a while.

There are two things I watch these kinds of videos for: To be entertained and to be educated.

Do they entertain me?

Not really. I found impromptu unboxings and Linus' own brand of humor entertaining when it was unscripted. There's not much of that anymore. I get that scrapyard wars and what-not kind of tries to still be that, but it isn't to me.

Do they educate me?

Eh. What I could learn watching their videos, I could go elsewhere to learn a lot more about. I could find better "skim the surface" videos for the same subject if I want to be introduced to it. shrugs I remember when I would seek LTT's videos out about a subject so I could learn intricacies about something that I would have to know what to specifically google for to find and that no other "introduction to the subject" video covered. FAP was sort of for this, I imagine, but they feel a wee bit more watered down than I remember experiencing with earlier LTT videos.

So why would I watch their content? I mean really.

I'd guess it's 50/50. I've learned a lot in the time I've been an LTT subscriber, so it makes sense that eventually I would move past what they do. But I also think they don't cover things as well as they used to. The cool ideas or wtv that came up in impromptu unboxings were nice.

It's also possible that the "neat" stuff you can cover as a tech reviewer, for Linus, is now a limited pool. LTT has covered a lot of stuff. There's only so much "neat" stuff worth covering before it becomes repeats of the same "ooooh, new king gaming monitor" and "ooooh, faster network interface tech" every season. Only so many ratcheting screw drivers.

So maybe it's 33/33/33. But to say it isn't LTTs direction would be a lie, I think.

Hmmm.

I still watch most of their videos though. Their WAN show is still good enough content for me to listen to it while working. It helps pass the time.

PC Per's podcast can get general, and I prefer Linus' way of treating audio reviews compared to PC Per by a mile, and more than Tek's. But PC Per has had some very nice stuff like the stuff they did with Gsync. Tech Gaming Weekly is my go-to podcast right now. I remember Joker admonishing Linus for not talking about QC issues more with his reviews, and frankly I agree with him.

I also find Joker's brand of humor to be the best out of all the other tech Youtubers.

Honestly I could not give a crap about what Linus does, All I see is a man with a family and workers trying to make a living

So like... billions of people in the world?

Sex jokes is the reason I can't stand JayzTwoCents. Linus doesn't do it as often and the jokes themselves aren't as terrible as other YouTuber's jokes.

So I have noticed the increase in sex jokes since the How to hide porn video and I don't really like that and I don't like the concept of vessel and I have noticed that the latest videos have been rushed but other than that I am fine with the way is headed.

And by the way I wouldn't be surprised if @Slick and @LinusTech watch some porn every once and I while

I am HATING the sex jokes and the How to Hide Porn video made me very mad. He should have done a "How to Browse Privately" video instead of blatantly appealing to porn users. Also, CSF Dildo Racing?! WTF?!?!

Remember the retro unboxing of the Evolv? That was good. But I admit, they could put more effort into the videos today, even though scrapyard wars is "the most popular" is no reason to lag behind in quality of other videos.
