Is Nvidia Shield Worth it?

Assassin

So I was planning to get a nexus 7 but then I though I could spend a little more and get a shield since I was also looking to buy a xbox controller. Anyone who owns shield? Is it worth the price? I will be streaming some games with my GTX 770.

only thing I see in the shield is the ability to play PC games anywhere in the house the rest of it is basically just another android tablet except with tegra 4.

Just do what Linus did and make a GHETTO SHIELD!

Its worth it if you want it. I have no desire whatsoever to play PC games in my hand around the house. I don't even like playing 3DS and the only reason I do is because of Pokemon and Monster Hunter. But if you want that ability, then yes!

No. It's not a good media consumption device (VIDEOS/MUSIC) since a gamepad gets in the way. My suggestion is to get a Nexus 7.2, case with stand and a wireless Xbox 360 controller with reciever and construct a Ghetto Shield.

The streaming from PC part is in BETA right now, if anyone on the forum had it then it wouldn't be a proper review. I think that it's kind of silly and I'd rather just use that money to buy another graphics card for my media PC and play games on my TV. I just never have the urge to play games on a cut down PC, if i did i would just get a DS or something like that.

Unless you can stream from your PC to anywhere with an internet connection, then no. The Shield does not justify $300 if you ask me.

I completely agree.  I was under the impression that you could already stream your PC games to Shield from anywhere with an internet connection.  I would consider getting one if I could do that.  But personally I would just go the Ghetto Shield route since you would definitely have more use for a Nexus 7.

I would say get a ghetto shield but since I put mine together, its simply doesnt have fast enough response times for the games I play (Payday 2, super Meat Boy, Border Lands 2,Dishonored , Garry's Mod, CSS/CS:GO)

Although it does give you a feel of what Nvidia shield would be like, its not a replacement by any means, I've tried both and Nvidia Shield streams perfectly so I know its not my internet. If you have the money and plan to use it for gaming, I would say buy the shield, If you don't plan on gaming much I would probably buy the nexus 7 even though technically the shield could be used for media as well as video game streaming.

It's also a brilliant AR Drone remote control.

I think if you have money to blow it is cool but really it is not something many are going to buy because of the price.  Instead they will run ghetto shield.  I look forward to trying ghetto shield at some point.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

The idea is cool, but the practicality of I feel isn't worth 300$.  If I want to play games via my PC, the experience is 1000% better on my PC. That's why we all have GAMING PC's.

So I was planning to get a nexus 7 but then I though I could spend a little more and get a shield since I was also looking to buy a xbox controller. Anyone who owns shield? Is it worth the price? I will be streaming some games with my GTX 770.

In case you are wondering, I came across a post in the nVidia forums about controller support.  There was a poll asking if people were interested in the Shield being used as a wireless controller for PC's.  This is currently not the case, whereby you can just play no games via Shield and use it as a standard controller.  There was overwhelming requests for this bonus feature, and an official post stated that they are going to add this in an upcoming update.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/571336/nvidia-shield/-vote-request-make-shield-detectable-as-a-controller-for-windows-xpadder-support-/post/3895392/#3895392

So if you built yourself a laptop kit, you could potentially replace an Xbox 360 controller with an entire Shield as an option.  Of course, only if you would want to use the other features of the Shield as well, since a $300 Xbox 360 controller is not that feasible. ;)

It also makes me wonder:  if using the Shield as a standard controller can become popular, it may be a gateway to make some interesting games on the PC.  For example, I remember way back in the day when a GBA was being used as a motion sensor to play a Gamecube game where Kirby is tilted on a surface and he moved around like a marble.  I believe this game never made it past the tech demo stage, but it makes you wonder how the Shield's features including secondary screen, accelerometer, and local speakers could be used to enhance existing games.  This type of thing was only reserved for consles (e.g. PSVita + PS3/4 or Nintendo DS + Wii or GBA + Gamecube), but via the Shield, it could be PC's turn.

But of course, there are plenty of haters on the Shield who don't see the potential.  Who knows if Shield will get enough sales and interest to cause game devs to add such neat features.
