VRAM - How much is enough?

Hello,

 

I am currently looking for some great graphics cards under £500. I have been looking at the ASUS GeForce GTX 980 Ti STRIX and it looks like a great card and the performance is outstanding. (From Benchmarks on videos)

 

 

There are many models of this card that have different amounts of VRAM. This one has 6GB. 

 

I am asking on how much VRAM should be good on highest settings on game like GTA 5 and other demanding games. (On GTA 5 i have tested on how much VRAM all the settings on high uses, without 1 of the advanced graphics settings enabled it can go the highest at just over 4GB of VRAM.

This will max out GTA V at 1080p 60+ frames. It should also at 1440p.

4GB should be enough at 1080, 6-8GB would be better for any higher.

All 980 Ti's have 6 gigs of VRAM.

 

VRAM isn't the only thing that's going to matter in games. You just need to look at benchmarks and decide if that performance is worth your dollar.

 

Also, inb4 people suggest a Radeon card instead.

Obviously you need 128gb what kind of question is that! jk i'd say 4gb for any modern graphics card is good. the 2gb cards a reaching there limit in new games like gta v and other vram eatting games. so a gtx 980 ti would fit you fin but you can go fury x if you want amd

6GB is plenty, and it doesn't just depend on VRAM.

Pretty sure this card only comes in 6GB (according to PCPartPicker), but it's pretty much the best card you can buy right now in terms of price/performance.

Anything over 6 GB is pretty much fine for any resolution, however you need ~12 GB to max out GTA V at 4K I believe.

you could go two r9 390s but crossfire/sli can cause some problems

980Tis only come with 6GB, there are no other capacities for that card. 

 

6GB is enough, even for 4K right now.

Also I will be doing just 1080p gaming at 60FPS. Nothing too fancy...

4GB is enough for 1080p/1440p right now, and a 980 Ti comes with 6GB so you're set.

For a radeon card I guess the fury x? Water cooled so overclock ftw, and major memory bandwidth so the high res. you go, the more frames you'll get.(Assuming you aren't consuming all 4 gbs.)

Nothing short of 32GB or you are the definition of a peasant.

 

For real though you will be totally fine with 4GB in the overwhelming majority of cases, ESPECIALLY at 1080p. A lot of people tend to severely overestimate how much VRAM they actually need (source: everyone crying about the 970 3.5GB thing when it didn't affect 98% of them). 6GB is PLENTY, even at 1440p and 4K.

iirc the fury's don't overclock well at all.

It depends what games you play. My VRAM usage is around 1GB and I play games like TF2.
