Cyrix 5x86.  I was expecting Pentium performance, and it just wasn't there.

 

Also I remember one of the cache memory chips was busted in that motherboard,  I used to get artifacts when playing Doom with it.

Edit: by pentium 4 I meant all of them, nowadays they can't do sh*t - a 540/J can't even play 480p youtube.

Oh my they were sooooooo crap! Have to agree here.

 

I was dumb enough to get a first gen Netbook. Battery life was awesome, but it struggled to do anything.

They're hardly great now. The best use I've seen for them is in the ZenFone 2, and that's only because x86 in a phone is cool.

Well at this point the CPU and graphics are enough to provide a lag free-experience for a standard user (until they install 50 toolbars and 20 pc optimizer programs).

Make no mistake, Atoms have come a loooooooooooong way. They're not the trashy underbinned pieces of quartz that Asus' netbooks made them appear to be anymore. I have the Zenfone 2 and it's flipping awesome. Just wish the UI wasn't so crap... but the chipset is brilliant. Also, the phone makes a terrific handwarmer.

Wendell did a video on the ASRock BeeBox and that thing is pretty good for what it is.

I wouldn't call it one of the best considering Intel went back to the P3 architecture and based future architectures off of it. Netburst was really bad.

There is bad, then there are epic fails and 4GHz 220W single core CPU that were cancelled.

Intel "Slot 1" Celeron, I had the 333MHz version. Thing was dog slow from lack of cache and had overheating issues. Looked similar to this:

I'm gonna go with the Pentium D's. Basically two P4's stitched together.

 

The p4 ht was nice but they should have introduced ht  with the first gen p4's.

 

Overall anything from the p4 lineup sucked.

The original Atom was pretty stupid. Intel was very proud at the time that they were able to build a CPU consuming such a small amount of power but in their infinite wisdom they paired it up with their age-old 945 chipset, which took a lot more power than the CPU itself did.

Netburst wasn't great but taught Intel quite a lot about high-performance processor design, in particular about pipelining to achieve higher frequencies, and the necessary scheduler improvements and performance band-aids to keep such a design fed with data.

The same is also true, to a lesser extent, for AMD's Bulldozer family, although the performance deficit also stems from being some process nodes behind Intel.
