T-Mobile customers exposed in major Experian data breach

I’ve always said that part of being the Un-carrier means telling it like it is. Whether it’s good news or bad, I’m going to be direct, transparent and honest.

We have been notified by Experian, a vendor that processes our credit applications, that they have experienced a data breach. The investigation is ongoing, but what we know right now is that the hacker acquired the records of approximately 15 million people, including new applicants requiring a credit check for service or device financing from September 1, 2013 through September 16, 2015. These records include information such as name, address and birthdate as well as encrypted fields with Social Security number and ID number (such as driver’s license or passport number), and additional information used in T-Mobile’s own credit assessment. Experian has determined that this encryption may have been compromised. We are working with Experian to take protective steps for all of these consumers as quickly as possible.

A breach at the data broker Experian has revealed names, addresses, and social security numbers for 15 million Americans, including anyone who filed a credit check with the carrier between September 1st, 2013 through September 16th, 2015. It's unclear how many other companies were involved in the breach, but no banking or credit card information appears to be involved. The social security numbers were being stored in encrypted form, but that encryption may have been compromised. Experian is in the process of contacting customers affected by the breach, and will offer two years of credit monitoring services to anyone affected. "We are working with Experian to take protective steps for all of these consumers as quickly as possible," T-Mobile CEO John Legere said in a statement.

It's not T-Mobiles fault though. 

 

What bothers me is this forced apologies and the letters that follow it.

 

"We sincerely apologize..."

"We take privacy very seriously..."

 

Your apology does not fix someones identity from being compromised and destroyed.

Furthermore, you clearly didn't take privacy that seriously if someone was able to access 15 million people's records.

I doubt this is only just T-Mobile customers. Hundreds of millions of people use Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax for credit checks for all different kinds of things. I expect a lot more companies will come out and say the same thing, T-Mobile is just the first one to do so.

Almost sounds like it was a server for T-Mobile. As in, potentially targeted.

Furthermore, you clearly didn't take privacy that seriously if someone was able to access 15 million people's records.

Same thing with the VW thing, where the CEO apologizes...except you only apologize when you get caught.  It's like "Yea, you're expected to do this."

I doubt there's some security system that can not be cracked eventually, if you have pretty good security measures, that doesn't stop anyone from trying to get in.

Im on MetroPCS, which is on T-Mobile. Am I effected?

If you ran a credit check through metro pcs, I am pretty sure you are affected. Since it's the same company, you'd assume they're using the same credit company to conduct their credit checks.

Well fuck me, I just switched from Verizon to T-Mobile last month...  I'm starting to think I need pay with cash everywhere I go and use burner phones from now on. 

 

Just signed up for a plan on the 4th, only 12 days away from being in the clear.

WTF, that's the exact same day I signed up for T-Mobile.  This man has clearly stolen my identity.

With all these data breaches and stuff what actually happens afterwards? I never hear of peoples stuff getting stolen unless it was the first and the person who found out it happened

why is t mobile name all over this.  it was Experian who was breached.

T-Mobile used Experian's services to run the credit checks on applicants and the breach exclusively affected people who applied for post-paid contracts and financed phones from T-Mobile.  Basically, T-Mobile trusted its customer's data to Experian and Experian essentially let hackers get away with all of T-Mobile's data.

yea i know its all experians fault.  just saying why mention or lead with t mobile. it experians problem and theirs to fix and issue a public "so sorry excuse"

Because T-Mobile customers are most affected (and signs are indicating that they were the only ones affected).  If you lead it with "Experian has massive breach", then 99% of the people who had their data stolen would assume it didn't apply to them because they're most likely unaware T-Mobile was using Experian's services.  leading off with "T-Mobile's Customer data compromised" is perfectly valid because that's exactly what happened.  It doesn't matter if it happened on T-Mobile's end or on the end of a third party, it still happened and the T-Mobile customers affected need to know immediately and spinning it so T-Mobile isn't mentioned makes no sense.
