[SFF Build] MSI 980 Ti Lightning + Liquid Cooling + Silverstone FTZ01

turtlesocks

I'm scaling down my current ITX build for something that will fit under my TV a little better :) no name yet, but I'm sure it will come soon.

I'll be using this build for streaming from my main rig, HTPC activities, and recording console peasant game play. Might give Steam OS a try for a bit as well!

Onto the specs!

  • Intel 4790k or 5775C - Haven't quite decided this yet, I'm going to attempt to delid for my first time so maybe whichever one survives eh?
  • EVGA Stinger Z97 WiFi - this unfortunately might have to change due to the WiFi card sticking up like it does, but hopefully not.
  • 2x4GB Corsair XMS RAM + EK Monarch Modules
  • MSI 980 Ti Lightning!
  • Silverstone SFX 600W
  • 2x Intel 530 180GB SSDs in RAID 0
  • Slot Load Blu-Ray drive
  • Silverstone FTZ01
  • EK Liquid Cooling!

Soooo as most builds start, I had very small plans with this, was going to air cool and everything. Then the more I sat on it and saw others doing liquid in this case, I figured I may as well do it as well, of course. So without further ado... lets start.

Don't mind the fingerprints, will be cleaned up a bit later.

Pretty standard SFF case. I went with the FTZ01 for the aluminum unibody

Whoever started doing this layout first with the GPU brackets is genius.

Very subtle logo, love it.

Got two fans on the bottom for GPU/radiator and one for the PSU

One on the top for CPU/Rad

Looks a bit crowded already...

Take that bit off though and it reveals a bit more space

Lovely 15mm thick fans

I put an SSD between the GPU and fans to hold off on the sag for now.

When you get it up and running, could you possibly tell us temps of the GPU in there like that?

Quick unboxing of the MSI 980 Ti Lightning here. MSI did an amazing job keeping a high end GPU, classy.

So shiny, like a holographic Pokemon card

I'd go with the broadwell for such a small system, the TDP will help.

Ah, yeah that's a good point.

When you get it up and running, could you possibly tell us temps of the GPU in there like that?

Sure. Though it'll be hybrid cooled compared to stock so may not mean much to you.

Plan looks good. Personally i'd mod the side window and add a perspex window to see the water cooled cpu. But if your just going to stick it in an entertainment unit then don't worry.

Clear tubes, coloured liquid, EK supremacy evo = mint!

i thought the r9 nano was made for this kind of thing, but hey, if a 980ti lightning fits it sits

:D

I thought about doing a window but nothing will be visible except cables once all said and done. (Putting a 120 rad on top of the CPU)

Wow this looks awesome. Are you planning on watercooling the graphics card as well? Seems that with only the dual radiator mounts you are going to have some issues.

Yeah it'll be water cooled. I'll be using a 240 and a 120, should be okay, but we'll see :)

have you measured out if the cpu inlet and outlet would interfere with the case? since it is a taller gpu and the block will add some height to it.. just saying ^^

Mmmm... total hardware pr0n! Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out! :)

Thanks!

You're watercooling? Custom? In that case?! Just CPU, though, right?

GPU too :)

On the CPU it's going to be really tight, I might have to use non-rotary angled fittings. The GPU is fine, just barely though.

Believe it or not there is only a little bit of extra vignetting added, most of it is lighting.

  • 1 month later...

Been traveling but I brought the rig with me to do some on-the-road-modding with a familiar face :)

Anyone recognize? :DTsFNa0e.jpg

AQP6v6d.jpg

Unfortunately it will not fit :(

Kw4GXty.jpg

Back to Bitspower...

Had to shave down the hole we drilled earlier in order to make the plug flush for the lid to close properly

2DF4PtF.jpg

Started sleeving...

CoYjf2u.jpg

While none other than Peter Brands (L3P) started cutting the Lightning stock cooler

EQnMhWV.jpg

Great photo! But all sleeved

IpXVuy9.jpg

lBH3914.jpg

The plan! MSI wanted to maintain their branding, this way I can have it hooked it up the GPU still and plus it will bring more air into the radiator :)

APNCKeB.jpg

To accommodate the pwm cable from the Lightning fan assembly we needed to cut the radiator

ZWyUVwM.jpg

Perfect!

We had to cut down the 120 rad too... super tight fit, every mm counts!

LykI58z.jpg

Now... to extend the slot in the front of the case that would normally be used by the DVD drive...instead we are putting the RGB glowing logo from the Lightning

sM3SNW6.jpg

Cleaning up the cut...

Now with both the RGB logo and fan assembly:

Nice idea using the gpu cooling fans for the rad.

You think you could do a windowed sidepanel mod. on the 120 side and maybe try some limited hardline in the future?
