Nvidia releases GeForce GTX 980 for gaming laptops

Essemm

http://hexus.net/tech/news/graphics/86639-nvidia-releases-geforce-gtx-980-gaming-laptops/

So I'm guessing this is the rumoured '990M' that has been talked about before.

EDIT: So apparently Linus has a video up on this so my post is kinda irrelevant.

This headline mobile GPU has the exactly the same specifications as its desktop brethren released a year ago. This means a full implementation of the GM204 die, so 2,048 cores operating at a base 1,126MHz core and 1,216MHz boost, helped on by 4GB of GDDR5 humming along at 7,010MHz.214e8add-5f3c-451a-a240-22b2eff6ad6e.PNG

Though announced today, select partners will be retailing GTX 980-toting models from next month onwards, replacing incumbent GTX 980M GPUs with this new, more powerful card. All are G-Sync capable, too, which makes sense on premium gaming machines. MSI, for example, is updating the behemoth GT80 laptop to feature two GTX 980 GPUs in SLI, bringing genuine 4K and VR potential to a semi-portable form factor. We expect to see the more restrained GTX 980-based enthusiast laptops start at £1,500 or so

I've never had a gaming laptop myself so I can't say it's exciting for me but it's great to see how much power we can get from laptops these days. I mean SLI 980's in a LAPTOP? Although I can't see anyone using one of these on their laps.

GTX 990M though...

It's the same thing. The desktop 980 chip was renamed "990M" for mobile because there's already a 980(M) for mobile, in an attempt to not confuse people, I assume.

EDIT:AFAIK at least. Looks like MSI just dropped the "M," I expect confused persons in the future though..

Wait, now they're promoting overclocking as A FEATURE? After they locked and unlocked it in mobile drivers multiple times with the excuse that "you shouldn't be overclocking a laptop anyway"?

Also, gg battery life

Sounds cool, although I personally wouldn't go for it. I prefer to stay in the *70M price range.

I know AMD will probably do this with the nano chips as well but for the time being: AMD you just got rekt at your own "tiny" form factor game.

That's how Nvidia does Fury nano. It fits in a fucking laptop.

all we need now is someone to create a new kind of mechanical keyboard switch that has a low profile so it can go in an actual laptop (not that terrible implementation by msi).

and bam actual desktop replacement

how's the power consumption on load tho? Battery will be sucked dry by it. ( unless you plug it to a charger ).

Portability. That's the

i know why they doing this.... AMD has everything bellow the 980ti covered on the desktop market... price wise and performance wise,.... so they pushing desktop gpus into laptops.... u can expect full 970 and 960 coming in near future... my opinion....

If AMD offers the nano in laptops, I'm sold. Need a desktop replacement for the semi.

980 has the same performance as the nano.

Haha yes, with 980 SLI and a powerful processor you are looking at min. 300 watts.

There will be a funny cooling sloution and the battery won't last more than 30 min under full load. This is only a "semi-portabe" machine in my oppinion.

On the other hand it's nice they try something new. But I'm definitly NOT gonna buy it....

it's just MSI being MSI. they clearly state it will be "semi-portable" because well.. MSI. and honestly, 30mins on full load with dual 980's & i7 ona freaking laptop is alright in my book. plug to play, unplug for work. suppose you can also find a different solution. like say, one 980? :P

Now, can nvidia please make this as a Nano-style add-in card for desktop please? It'd take a bit of extra hardware but imagine... If you could achieve the same density as in the SLI MSI model, there could potentially be a Dual-GPU card for desktop about the size of the nano. Although finding space for the GDDR5 would be the limiting factor, I imagine.

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

I'm using this data to judge this site's biases so people can post in a more objective way.

Not really. The amount of disadvantages of laptops is endless. These WILL thermal throttle, CPU, storage, and ram is not as flexible, screen is meh unless you want to lug around a separate screen, etc. The nano is meant for people who aren't using it WHILE travelling, but want lots of power, which is easily portable. Once a case is made that has literally been nought space for a PSU at the bottom, an ITX mobo on top, and space for one or two 2.5" slots, the nano will really shine due to its tiny length and height just allows for a CPU cooler to be installed.

I would agree, and I wrote it.

I was having trouble with the quote function. I can't seem to move them or write between them.
