should i just get a console?

*note- do not argue about one being superior to the other, i need advice for my specific situation.

 

so i really want to get into gaming, but spending $600-700 on a computer just seems a little bit rough for me right now. im a teenager with a limited budget of about $650 ( would probably be an i5 4460 / gtx 960 ), i already have a laptop that works good enough for basic school work and stuff btw. the other option would be an xbox one, which i found for $280 for the 500g model. i play csgo on my laptop right now, which isnt great but im certainly not going to build a pc just to play that. that games i do want to play are fallout 4, bioshock infinite, mgsv, mad max, and maybe gta 5. what can you guys recommend for me.

I'd still go for the PC. 

 

Keep in mind, games will be much cheaper and you won't have to pay $10 ($5? I don't know....it's something)/month for Live.

Okay, a i5 4460 and GTX 960 / R9 280 will be a great combo and you could probably get it for less than you think!

My friend just built a PC for $350 and it plays all his games maxed out. It has an fx6300 and r9 280x. Plays ark at medium 1080 60FPS

I game on a PC slightly less powerful than this one and I can tell you there are very few games I don't max out. All games have more than acceptable frame rates. Trust me, it's a kick ass combo at a good price. Plus when Pascal drops next year a GTX X060 will be a awesome upgrade choice.

an i5/960 build would take a huge dump on the consoles. At the end of the lifespan of the ps4 you will have spent like 400 on psn anyway. Point being entry cost may be higher but pc is still cheaper. You will save money in the long run by just getting the better system.

PC is cheaper in long run. (estimating 15 games bought for $10 each on PC, and $55 each on XB1, and $50 of live over 4 years).

Its $800 for the PC, and $1165 for the XB1.

You cant play bioshock infinite on xbox one, besides can you even play shooters with a gamepad?

You could drop your budged to 400$ and still get something somewhat proper, or you could go used.

You also need some kind of screen though....

so i really want to get into gaming, but spending $600-700 on a computer just seems a little bit rough for me right now. im a teenager with a limited budget of about $650 ( would probably be an i5 4460 / gtx 960 ), i already have a laptop that works good enough for basic school work and stuff btw. the other option would be an xbox one, which i found for $280 for the 500g model. i play csgo on my laptop right now, which isnt great but im certainly not going to build a pc just to play that. that games i do want to play are fallout 4, bioshock infinite, mgsv, mad max, and maybe gta 5. what can you guys recommend for me.

That'll add about $25 to the cost, but it'll also give you four DIMMs and front panel USB-3.0. But is that worth paying $330 more than for the XB1 you found? You have to evaluate what you would do with that $330 and whether it's worth more to you than having a quite strong gaming PC. One thing though, Bioshock Infinite isn't available on XB1/PS4, it's only in XBox360 and PS3, and the game really shows the limitations of those consoles. It just looks so much better on PC with the improved textures. And Bioshock Infinite is a masterpiece of a game. Beautiful graphically, great action, and one of the most intriguing storylines I have seen in a game.

It's slim, but it's not none. I have a friend who bought an 8-series board new recently and had to do a BIOS update to support the newer Haswell chips. But I bought my H81 board in August 2014 and didn't need any update.

IF you care about the console exclusives, that's virtually the only reason. As for the people who are saying it will have vastly superior performance, it won't. It'll have about the same, just with the advantage of being a PC. Linus even made a video about it.

a few weeks ago i decided to recreate the hardware of a console to see what it'd cost - and building a pc with console-grade performance costs about as much as getting a console.

 

that said, theres much better picks to be made, and you're actually able to piece together a pretty killer system for around the price of a console.

 

and once you got that first system going, you're on a roll.

 

a decent power supply will last you a "lifetime" hard drives can be carried over, a good case will last longer than you do.

 

what i'm getting at here is theres really only two points of spending money for performance upgrades:

- GPU

- CPU/mobo (and to a certain point ram also comes in with this

 

its just a matter of alternating between the two (with every once in a while doing storage upgrades, and maybe some other stuff)

theres a livestreamer that's been doing this for 10 years with his main rig. by now everything has been replaced, but it's only been a big cost at the start, all that followed were incremental upgrades.

 

as for channeling my inner logan: a pc is so much more, you can use it for school work, you can learn stuff, etc.

one thing that keeps annoying me about consoles is backwards (and forwards) compatibility. if your console is outdated (eg a new console is released) you wont find much games for it, the new games that come out for it will be insanely nerfed, to even barely run on the platform, and as soon as you upgrade, you'll have to re-buy those games to play them on your new system.

 

on pc, your pc gets outdated, you buy a new game and realise "hm, its not quite as smooth as it can be" you simply test what part of your sytsem is lacking, and set aside a budget for an upgrade to upgrade that part, once thats done, its like having a whole new system, playing your new game as if you have an entirely new system, while only having spent 1/3-1/2 of the cost of a new console.

 

what i'm getting at is that the PC may look expensive up front, but theres MUCH benefits to it in long term, as well as A LOT of free content to enjoy.
