I listen to a lot of Monstercat music, what headphones should I get?

Long story short, I'm looking to buy a nice pair of headphones. I want something for under $170 that will be good for listening to EDM in general, but the stuff Monstercat's artists release as well. Specifically, stuff from Muzzy, Rogue, Haywyre, Grabbitz, Deon Custom, etc. I really like bass that can make my head shake but I don't want muddy crap. Here are some songs as a guide in case I'm being a bit vague:

Over ears. I'm using them at home only, so portability isn't a big deal.

If you're still interested in open back headphones I would check out the Phillips Fidelio X2 and try to find a deal on them as they're usually a bit more. You can also try the Phillips SHP9500. I would suggest using an EQ to get that bass you like.

Those Audio Technica AD500Xs I mentioned really have a flat level of bass so an EQ would be a must with those of you went for them.

I'm still considering open back stuff, so I'll keep it in mind. Headphones are one of the many things I have little clue about, so I'm asking everyone to get a general opinion.

My friend... I suggest you grab the FLAC or AAC files of your favorite Monstercat songs!

Got some great entry level audio gear on sale now!

I'll definitely look into getting FLACs/AACs, I'll be keeping MP3s/MP4s on my phone though since I've got 10GB of music already and it's not getting smaller any time soon :P

I'm always skeptical of Massdrop. I don't mind spending a little more to have my stuff now as opposed to a few weeks later. That being said, I'll still look into it.

AAC is actually smaller than MP3 in size(if were talking the same song compared to each other). AAC was designed to replace MP3 but that never really happened as you can see, AAC also maintains higher audio fidelity over MP3 in general.

From what I remember you have ATH M50s. I can tell you that, from my experience the HD518s I own myself have more bass than I would like but it might work for you. When and if you go to Best Buy try the HD558s on and imagine them a bit more closed and a bit bassier. You might find you like them.

why grab FLAC or AAC?

alright AAC i understand cause its the middl ground but really you're wasting disk space. :/ IMHO.

320kb MP3 or higher it all sounds the same but i guess its just personal preference. xP

im not really sure if they're the best deal but i am 100% satisfied with my Samson SR950 and SR850's. (gonna mod the latter with the former's ear pads and what not to improve comfort while getting open back <3 )

they're on massdrop too. xP  pretty good deal. they sound great for under 100$ for metal, jazz, techno, basically name a sound and they'll sound damn good for the money if you get them on sale. :P:D:)

(the SR850 will give you a headache. it does for me atleast, however, other than open/closed and i think the drivers the only difference is thickness of the ear pads, so you can just buy the 950's ear pads and slip those on. :P )

dont buy audeze LCD2.

only i may have those.

they're too classy for anyone else to have them.

Shoot I don't have the link to the audio testing site I use to go to. It's got a audio test for you hearing abilities... some people can hear a difference some people can't, it's stuff that's on the very edge of your perception of sound.

FLAC? It's nice to have, TTA works as well. AAC saves more space and is better than MP3 so that's why I suggested that. I have uhh at least 1.5TBs of music and I don't regret a thing.

i think the only reasons i'd need  more harddrive space would be music and video. xP i download literally nothing else. x"D i play stabround and source games.

i'll look into going to AAC. sounds nice <_> >///<

tek syndicate did a video ages ago with whatshisface from mayflouwer (yes i spell it that way. deal with it grammar and spelling nazis)

and they did a blind test between the 320+ MP3 and full FLAC. and said it was within placebo and margin of error. (also us rabbits

If you can find AKG K553 in your budget, grab them. I found a pair at guitar center for $125 before tax and they are probably my new favorite headphone

Great deep bass, plus the accurate treble AKG is known for.

My previous favorite was the HD650, with occasional use of a K612. The 553 is the best of both worlds, having deeper bass response than the 650, and maintaining that AKG treble plateau. There is a small dip in the upper bass/lower mids that takes away some warmth people may miss, but I tend to not notice it.

Although it is closed-back, it does not offer much isolation. This prevents it from feeling stuffy despite the very squishy pleather pads. Because of the squishy padding, some people may get ear lobe discomfort from the driver housing. Depth feels similar to my K612, but there is no foam padding between the earpad backing microfiber and driver grill. Headband padding is slim but somehow sufficient. They do grip your head a fair bit, falling into the snug category of most Sennheisers

Because of the fit, I think they would be a good portable option for someone who doesn't need much isolation... iiiiifff the cable was shorter. Or removable. Why doesn't every headphone come with a removable cable nowadays? As they are, they're more of a studio or work/professional product (which is pretty much intended by AKG).

Analysis of these two posts:

Both are stupid suggestions and one can't even spell bass correctly.

Skullcandy Crushers. Personally, I'd opt for a more reference sounding set, but for you... These will do nicely. They have "Dual Driver Technology" that somehow makes the headphones actually shake. Pretty cool effect, doesn't get old as easily as you'd think, not uncomfortable.

That's a terrible suggestion. Not only are those headphones terrible, but that "Dual Driver" thing is literally a little weighted motor that just makes the headphones shake. They're totally useless headphones for someone that wants to have good sound.

Something I meant to ask but forgot about, should I get some sort of AMP/DAC to go with them, or should onboard be enough since they're only 32ohm?
