If OP bought it new he should definetely ask for a refund. I'm guessing it was a secret factory refurb.

Very sorry for your issues, but I will bookmark this post for future reference when people don't believe me that these things are a fire hazard >.<

As for a new one - go with SeaSonic for the safest bet - M12II Evo 620W - just get the Evo edition and enjoy safety and stability.

while caution is certainly important, i feel like you shouldnt base on one occasion tho.

that said, it'd actually be a good idea to see which brands get reported as "exploded" the most.

This is why I buy SeaSonic - because I am overly paranoid and with good reason.

This is fairly common - I usually read/watch a vid about such a thing once a week - each time a different case.

I can second this guy, when my CX750 went kaboom the smell it left was really damn pungent. ...like it took a PSU fart after eating some oldish mcdonalds through the power plug.

good PSU for the build? i could recommend a XFX XTR/Seasonic G (550-650) Cooler Master VSM/V EVGA GS/G2/B2 or as @STRMfrmXMN mentioned Antec HCG :). if on a slight budget then a M12ii/S12ii would be a solid choice too :)

No - no no no - RM have bad secondary capacitors. You ever seen a capacitor blow? It chews through a motherboard like a knife through butter. Put a dent in the case. No.

Trust me - the RM are not worth - after your experience I'd strongly suggest not getting them else you'll end up as paranoid as me :D

The RM650 isn't that great of a PSU ethier, Go safe and get a good XFX/Seasonic Unit or EVGA-Superflower/EVGA-Seasonic (Not EVGA-HEC or EVGA-FSP) :).

If i had to get a corsair PSU i'd get something like the RMi or AX/AXi instead, but even then the G2's would be a better choice.

I think it's about time for a Witch Hunt regarding the CX units? Anyone?

I think there is already a pretty dark cloud over the CX Units, but it is deservedly so.

i remember there used to be a time when all i would see is people shoveling in CX PSU's into builds in the same way a kid would shovel mcdonalds into their Mouths. funny thing is both examples are similar, Kid see's happy smiley ronald mcdonald, and the mcdonalds branding and thinks that the food they are eating is ....tasty and delicious without realising they are eating junk, sameish for the CX line's, People see Corsair....automatic good brand....Shovel the PSU in without looking deeper into it.

I know i do repeat myself like a broken record but to be honest i am happy to see a dark cloud over the CX units, might help rain away the stupid "Fancy brand = automatic good Product" thing.

Only way to know is to get a new PSU and test it - if no damage was done (no holes on the PSU casing) I doubt the capacitor blew hard enough to damage anything outside it. Still - throw that thing out the window.

One day - I will gather my children not around a campfire, but around a corsair CX PSU and tell ghost stories about events such as this one :D
