drones can go unnoticed on radar because remember at low altitudes any radio object wont appear on radar

 

they are also slow af and have a very limited autonomy - you'd have to time it extremely well and know the exact position of the plane (if you could even reach it).

multi rotors are no danger to anyone if you just use your common sense, don't fly where there are people around, fly in a field preferably. Have a fail safe setup so if you lose line of sight with your quad make it just hover, however there is an argument for making them just fall out of the sky (depending on the size of course, with my 250 sized quad I think just cutting the power to the motors is fine). It's the people who don't use their common sense that ruin it for everyone else..

And plane engines are tested by throwing birds inside so I doubt you could make a plane crash with a rc vehicle

Except for the fact that a bird can easily destroy an engine (or damage it to the point where it no longer functions). Even small stones/screws can pose a threat to jet engines (FOD sweeps are done on aircraft carriers for a reason -- and yes, I understand that there are differences between a fighter jet and a commercial jet).

I dont think you realize that "destroy" just means that it stops functioning

a broken blade will stop it functioning

and you need more than a bird to kill a jet engine

When I said destroy I meant cease to function, which could pose a pretty big problem if you happen to be taking off and don't have quite enough speed/height to approach a runway.

I don't know about many $1000 drones that can reach 39,000 feet, and certainly none that could accurately be controlled to fly into a plane engine that's traveling at 800+ km/h at said altitude.

Not only that, but they test the engines by throwing fucking chickens in them. I think a drone would be easy peasy for the engine to swallow without harm.

if the pilot spotted it from the limited windows of his cabin it must have been a lot bigger than any consumer-grade device. And it was way too high up to be one. It was a black object of unknown type and size. Could have been anything ranging from a large bird to a helium balloon. All you have to show are people who don't know what they saw and assume without any basis that it might have been a drone. That's about as reasonable as saying it was a flying saucer.

That's not true with all airports. Many aren't like that -- and iirc there was an incident where an aircraft didn't get enough height on takeoff and ended up smashing into a building; and then there are airports like the one in ST. Thomas where you have a mountain very close to the end of the runway. In an ideal situation it wouldn't be an issue, however there are some airports with a less than ideal layout.

Also, a terrorist attack wouldn't even have to destroy the plane/cause deaths. Simply knocking planes out of the sky (even if the plane manages to land perfectly) is still a great way to instill fear (i.e. successful terrorism).

Actually every single runway is built like that. There's just limitations on what aircraft are allowed to land or leave using said runway. There's a reason you never saw a 747 at Meigs.

Terrorist would much rather use the plane as a weapon then just blown one up. Also drones can't fly fast enough to keep up with jets.

I suppose it depends on the grill and the turbine. It wouldn't have to be very fine or thick, all it needs to do is keep out objects larger than 15x15 cm. I doubt something like that can seriously hinder the capabilities of a plane engine.

Not necessarily. I can think of a very powerful terrorist tactic that's literally impossible to prevent....yet it hasn't been done yet/it's not very common.

You target the plane on takeoff/landing (ideally take off).

If you did it near an airport then everybody would see a drone flying towards a plane and take appropriate action to stop it.
