I never doubted that there was physics involved but nothing to extreme to a level were the average gamer can't complete a task. I am talking like curved space time and stuff like Einstein and Maxwell found.

It`s a game that really requires KB+M to play it properly. Also it has a lot of great mods.

Flying with kb/m sucks but playing with a controller won't be an issue

This is why Unity is so popular, porting to different platforms is made really easy. As for the game... I don't know this will definitely expand their market by a LOT but it's still not something I would play.

Flying with KB+M is ok, except for planes. And you often have to right click a part to use it, which wouldn`t work very well on a controller. Also building spacecraft on a controller will be harder.

All of which simplifies back to simple Newtonian orbital physics in the limits of functional space travel between planets. That would start to be useful when you were considering moving extremely close to stars or anywhere near black holes, not for interplanetary travel.

In the game yes, relativity isnt included, and its not even attempting to solve n-body problems (with n >2). Everything that can be, is on rails. But in real interplanetary rocketry (and even LEO) relativity is a big thing.

Umm,,, Every GPS sattellite. every Weather sat. every geostationary sat. the ISS. every sattellite that is operational. mars orbiters. new horizons. rossetta.

Those are just the few missions of every that had to account for relativistic spacetime deformations to not fail. 

Just as an example, your GPS would be wrong by 100s of kilometers if the sensors on the sats hadnt accounted for spacetime disturbances due to acceleration.

This is awesome. Although the reflex may be "who cares console" or some such, this will probably literally inspire future engineers and STEM majors and we're gonna go to Mars woooo! Hopefully without the dying.

I love KSP and have about 200 hours into it as of now, but I have trouble imagining playing it with a controller. 

 

That said, I hope the developers do move to all the big consoles to increase the player-base.

its done with Newtonian physics. Even in the real world you can get away with just using newtonian because of the small sizes and speeds of the craft,singals to the craft is the exception,especially the time keeping part.

not in the near future. Even earths space time curvature is extremely small,the models they show on tv are greatly exaggerated. Ie there is no space or time but there is spacetime,very subtle difference.

The >100km differences in GPS accuracy are about using Galileo ("naive") transformation vs Lorentz transformation.

The Lorentz transformation is perfectly covered by the special theory of relativity that does not involve curved spacetime, which was only introduced in the general theory of relativity.

All those space missions are fine by ignoring the impact of curved spacetime and just using the STR, it's more relevant in cosmologic theorizing.

it is, reaching space no problem, land on another planet much harder, landing on 2 planets in one trip, holy crap. The game is as hard as you want it to be. Also re fueling station in orbit is nice.

They were trying not to make a run of the mill space simulator, docking in orbit is one of the hardest things to do imo.

That is not at all what it is... Just getting into orbit is often a challenge but apparently it's even possible to redirect asteroids. So if you ever want to be SpaceX or NASA for a while play KSP.

Console release won't happen soon.

 

They're now developing v1.1 for windows/osx/linux ( with a probable x64 win version ) which will include Unity5, so much better multithreading capabilities and newer Physx are going to help a lot consoles. And pc too, obviously.

I still remember my early struggles of trying to get into orbit, only to be sub-orbital each time. Fun times.

I know right! It took hours to finally nail down how to do that.

I had to watch the same scott manley video like 10x before I learned how get a stable orbit without running out of fuel.
