I don't think he meant that it was bad just the part about it being intern gives you no money is bad

That's the point of a non-paid internship. Nobody forces you to do it....

And there are restrictions that limit how long interns can work and what tasks they have the technical ability to perform, etc. Atleast this is from my experience.

well this is Canada we're speaking about not the US so they have different laws about how interns can be used and if they have to be payed or not

That's a huge generalization... I've had great experiences interning. It does teach a lot.

Indeed it is. My problem is that interships make no sense when you consider the existence of on the job training.

I don't think he meant that it was bad just the part about it being intern gives you no money is bad

Some places WILL treat interns like slaves, although I would hope not all.

Indeed, but why do some places have on the job training (where you get paid) and others have internships? The bottom line is that you do real work, for which the company will profit, and get paid $0.00 an hour.

I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that, but it still seems kinda like the interns are getting the shit covered end of the stick.

It's not so cut and dry regarding internships in British Columbia(and the rest of Canada), there are exemptions for unpaid work.

Saying it is "illegal" in Canada is wrong.

Saying it is illegal in Canada is a way for me to avoid going back and forth explaining this to the 1-2 people per DAY who email me asking if they can come intern at LMG :P

We don't to internships because they are either illegal (if the person is doing real work and not being paid) or pointless (most academic or otherwise legitimate internships require the intern to only observe).

And we don't do paid ones, because if I wanted to spend the money I'd hire a qualified employee, rather than doing an internship :P

So wait, in Canada, you can have interns, but you have to pay them, but then aren't they just employees then? Or is it considered something like on the job training?

If they observe only you don't need to. If they do actual work you need to pay them or it's illegal.

That's what I understood from Linus.

He doesn't need interns to observe since that is somewhat useless considering the workflow of LMG anyway. Observe what? lol. Observe as in learn and develop experience.

Yes interns here are basically just low paidpaid entry level employees.

If I wanted those, I'd just create a job posting for that in the first place and then everyone could apply.. Not just "interns"

I think companies in the US do it because it seems so hard to fire someone sometimes that it gives them a chance to try out the worker and just let them go after a period, but if they like the person and their work they can offer them a full time position.

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

In Canada (or at least BC) we have a 90 day probation period where you can terminate a lousy hire with no notice or reason so it's a non-issue here :)

Technically most places here are a "employment at will" type thing that allows people to quit and be fired at any time for any reason, but that doesn't stop people but suing or filing frivolous lawsuits.

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

#TheInternship

Linus has said this numerous times, he can't do unpaid internships (Sadly) its against Canadian law

In British Columbia, where he lives, unpaid Internships are illegal unless:

1. They are a hands-on practical portion of an educational course (eg: Work placement in school/college/university - though in the tech field, it's expected that you'll get paid - and most colleges won't count the credit unless you get paid)

2. Certain specific industries are exempt from this law (eg: architecture, law, chiropractory, engineering, real estate)

Nothing you would do at LMG would be even close to the industries that are exempt.

I'm sure the office could use a bad cook. A maid would actually be useful, you could run around organizing and cleaning all day.

If Linus hired a maid they would snap and start smacking people with the broom, I'm sure of that. :P
