US F-16 fighter jets arrive in Turkey to join campaign against Islamic State

Arty

I don't think that's entirely accurate. They use drones pretty frequently in military strikes in other AO's.

What do you mean they can't shoot back at a human being?

That'd technically make any aircraft off limits...or long range missiles and their platforms.

It was something that bringing drones into war can save soldiers lives, but if everyone does it, it becomes a slaughterfest. If lets say USA attacks ISIS with 14 drones, ISIS can't kill people by taking down the drones, but USA can, since they are shooting at people - they don't want it the other way around, so it is limited how much they use drones in the military.

1 shoots 2 with drone, 2 responds with more drones, killing more soldiers than the drones actually saved by being unmanned.

It might not be entirely accurate, but there is definitely something to it.

I believe they are not really allowed to use drones, since they cannot shoot back at a human being. There is some kind of funky rule of war that says that - you may only engage if the enemy can engage you. Don't quote me on that though, but there is something about it

The US already used Turkey as a base for Drone Strikes... last week. Does anyone read the full article?

There are no such requirements against Drone use. The main reason why Terrorists and Rogue States don't use Drones, is because they are advanced (And very expensive, generally) pieces of technology.

America uses Drone Strikes as much as they possibly can. The main reason why they curb them in any capacity is simply for PR reasons.

A-10's are awesome, and great at close air.

Some would say better than F-16's.

Better at close air support, especially against armoured vehicles. The jets are designed for different roles. A-10 is extremely role specific. Whereas the F-16 is a combination Air Superiority and Strike Fighter.

Ya, but it's not like there is any enemy air.

I'd think the A-10's would be better for the job because most of the airstrikes are probably better suited for the A-10.

I thought A10s were being retired and replaced by F35s ?

Lol, the only thing being replaced by f35s is all of the US tax payers money. The test pilots so far will take f15s over it any day. It's a flying tub of fuck you money. The a10s were retired for who knows why, since no aircraft can compete with it's ground killing power.

Indeed, the A-10 would be much better suited in my opinion. While ISIS might have gotten hold of some of the Iraqi and Syrian air fleet, the US and allies combat air patrols in the area would be more than enough to take care of any that tried anything against an A-10 attack run.

Besides, it's not like they'd send in an A-10 alone if there was even a chance of enemy fighters launching. They'd have escorts nearby.

Well the F-35 is supposed to be a "jack of all trades", a joint strike fighter that can fill any role, but excel at none. Both the F-15 and F-22 are better at air superiority. The F-18 Super Hornet can carry more missiles and bombs for strike missions. The F-15 is also better at interception.

But the F-35 is way cheaper per unit compared to the F-22, and has a way better stealth profile compared to the F-15, F-16, and F-18 - not true complete stealth, like the F-22, but still far better.

However, the question is, does that make it good enough? I'd say, probably not. I'd personally rather have a fleet of F-15's and F-22's covering my back if I was an A-10 pilot.
