US F-16 fighter jets arrive in Turkey to join campaign against Islamic State

The US European Command said the US air force deployed a "small detachment" of six F-16 jets, support equipment and about 300 personnel at Incirlik Air Base.

The detachment is part of the 31st Fighter Wing based at Aviano Air Base, in Italy, it said.

Turkey carried out airstrikes against IS targets in Syria last month following a suicide bombing that killed 32 people and the killing of a soldier by IS militants, and agreed to allow the US to use the strategically-located base.

The moves ended months of reluctance by Turkey, giving it a more active role in the US-led coalition against the extremist group.

Last week, US armed drones taking off from Incirlik struck IS positions, and Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said an "extensive" fight against the extremists would soon begin.

 

 

"The United States and Turkey, as members of the 60-plus nation coalition, are committed to the fight against ISIL in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region," the US military said, using an alternative name for the militant group.

Turkish media reports say the US is expected to deploy around 30 fighter jets at Incirlik for strikes against IS.

Incirlik is located close to IS strongholds across the border in Syria, allowing the US to move more swiftly and nimbly against IS targets.

Its use enables the coalition to conduct better surveillance over Syria and act quicker on intelligence than when it was limited to launching flights from places like Iraq, Jordan and the Gulf states.

well middle east cluster fuck, I am turkish and lemme explain the situation a bit. Government was trying to end kurdish terrorism by giving kurds political rights in parliament, AKP government bailed from that decision after the elections were not in their favor and lost majority and kurds already had enough votes to get seats in parliament. Shit got back to where it was back in 2008 after Suruç bombing, PKK terrorism is back and they are back to killing people with guerilla style tactics (AND FYI PKK is accepted as terrorist organization by NATO countries) since "some" countries were arming kurds for their fight against ISIS they already had weapons to attack turkish and surprise surprise they started again, lemme clarify that not all kurds are PKK sympathizer. Turkish military and government was against arming kurds for fighting against ISIS as it was a certain that weapons would end up in the hands of PKK again (previously happened with Iraq when American forces gave weapons to kurds) and turkish people would suffer. Anyways if some of you arent that ignorant and wanna learn more ask away.

I believe they are not really allowed to use drones, since they cannot shoot back at a human being. There is some kind of funky rule of war that says that - you may only engage if the enemy can engage you. Don't quote me on that though, but there is something about it

I don't think that's entirely accurate. They use drones pretty frequently in military strikes in other AO's.

What do you mean they can't shoot back at a human being?

That'd technically make any aircraft off limits...or long range missiles and their platforms.
