Actually it wasn't always 301 it used to be 355.

After about 100 entirely unnecessary GUI modifications, they finally decide to fix something that is ACTUALLY BROKEN.

But it wasnt broken. They coded it to freeze at some arbitrary number of quickly obtained views to verify they were from actual viewers not bots or whatnot.

Youtube could have "fixed" this ages ago, but I guess they wanted to keep that iconic part of youtube around.
