Intel to AMD Graphics

blankoos

It doesn't seem like my newly built PC is using the dedicated R9 390 GPU from Sapphire...

I downloaded the bloody Catalyst Control Center but it says: AMD Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Center.

And when I go to Screen Resolution > Advanced settings, it says:

Adapter Type

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Adapter Information

Chip Type: AMD ATOMBIOS

DAC Type: © 1988-2010, Advanced Micro D (Wink, wink...)

Adapter String: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

BIOS Information: GRENADA

Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB

Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB

System Video Memory: 0 MB

Shared System Memory: 256 MB

May I ask wtf is going on with my system?

And how do I fix it?

You downloaded AMD graphics drivers? In your motherboard BIOS have you set the default display device?

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

I THINK the 390's use a different catalyst than the rest, don't quote me on that.

Uninstall Microsoft's driver in Device Manager.

You can't uninstall the Microsoft Basic Display Driver, as it's a failsafe for when you install a GPU and don't have drivers for it.

How lol.

You download the drivers from the Catalyst application, which won't open Cx

uninstall your driver

go into device manager and right click on display adapter and update driver

let windows update install driver instead of catalyst

You've obviously done something wrong.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Is it necessary to have a disc to install the drivers?

I thought you could do so digitally...

Okay, if you're using any kind of disk you're doing it wrong.  Please follow the instructions provided by your manufacture to install any software.

Edit: side note, considering that you've probably already done something critical to the system, I'd highly advise doing a clean install of the OS.

Lol right, all I've missed is to install the GPU drivers.

Let's reinstall everything!

I don't even know what video card you got, so how am I suppose to help you any further?  All I know is you have a R9-390 chip, I don't know what manufacture or model.  Not only that, you didn't provide us with any other details other than you're using a disk to create the installer for the driver, which isn't a thing at all.

If you need help finding the driver, I'll be more than happy to help, but I'll need more information from you.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

"R9 390 GPU from Sapphire..."

What else do you need?

And what do you mean by "using a disk to create the installer for the driver"

That's pretty basic, to download all the drives from the disc that comes with your motherboard and GPU.

I mean, why else would they even ship the discs if it's, and I quote "isn't a thing at all."

Model number?  Come on, you have to give a little bit of effort.

I'm just going to throw a dart at the wall and guess you have a Sapphire Nitro R9 390 8G D5.  If you do, then go here to get your driver for that video card.  http://www.sapphiretech.com/productdetial.asp?pid=C436E37C-8A09-48B6-9F2B-F4AF86E377B6〈=eng

Also considering we've made it this far, I'm going to assume you haven't installed your chipset driver or anything else like that?

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

You know AMD drivers are literally a Google away, admittedly knowing what Windows people are on but most are on 7 or 8 so... http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Radeon-300-Series.aspx

Make sure your cable is plugged into the GPU and not the motherboard one, looks like your drivers weren't installed anyway

AMD drivers can be found here:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Manufacturer doesn't really make a difference (best to bookmark it)

Microsoft basic display driver is designed to run on 99% of cards so you can get to the desktop and install specific drivers.

Incase you didnt check Sapphire's support page, you shouldnt use the generic driver with this card as it is NOT a reference design.

A) its not generic, its official

2) Non reference doesn't normally affect the drivers, had plenty of non reference cards and used official drivers

C) on there driver page "Obtain the Latest AMD Official Catalyst Driver Utility"

D) by all means show me where it says that, if there is a conflict of information best report it to Sapphire

Look on their support page, it gives you a specific link to the specific driver.  You should always use the one that the manufacture supplies.  REGARDLESS, It is not a reference design and SHOULD NOT be treated as one.

And the OP has probably done some serious damage to their reg, as well as other components to the OS with all the modifications they have made.

I HAVE looked, I'm asking YOU to link where it says not to use official drivers.

The ones on AMDs site are the same as the Sapphire site anyway (I checked) .

What GPU are you using?

#1, the reference card and the Nitro are NOT the same card.  They will have different cooling profiles.  If you ran the Nitro with EXACT reference drivers, then you will not get the full potential of the card.  Even with that said, once again, I gave the poor man a link to the OFFICIAL driver that Sapphire OFFICIALLY has placed on their page for that card (if that is the card he even has, becasue he still hasnt confirmed the model).

Bringing me around to #2, the OP has probably already done more damage than good to his current install of the OS.  I know that he is having further issues with the driver not installing as well as the video card not working at all.  This could easily be a hardware issue.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

You still haven't given me a link that says not to use them, fan curves are usually built into the BIOS and you seem to be muddling them up.

But I'll be back with something to prove if I'm right or wrong
