i dont why we even need UEFI it just has a larger surface area for attack

should have gone with coreboot

 

many are affected including dell lenovo and other BIOS vendors so if u get an update for your board do it asap

 

 

Most modern motherboards support firmware write protection to prevent unwanted BIOS flashes, but a vulnerability in many UEFI firmware implementations could accidentally disable such protection. A new warning posted by Carnegie Mellon University's CERT says that when many x86-based systems wake from sleep, they fail to enable that write protection .

The security hole opens when an affected system goes to sleep and then wakes up. Many Intel-based x86 systems use a specific flag stored in a BIOS register that controls write protection. When the bit is turned on, the BIOS is write-protected—but that bit is turned off by default. Every time a PC resets, this register is also reset to the default state, and it's up to the BIOS to set it correctly. When a PC sleeps, the wake process is treated as a hardware reset, so the register resets in turn. Many BIOS implementations don't flip the write-protect bit again, so after a sleep-wake cycle, write protection is disabled.

Seriously, people crapped on Apple for using a UEFI and when Microsoft does it its all of a sudden "a great thing". I really don't see the need to fix something that isn't broke(except for when tinkering), all its doing now is causing more problems(although typical for Microsoft).

Am not scared to be honest. OOOO~ When I put my computer to sleep I always restart the damn thing because it messes up with my voltages and makes it to 1.3V instead of keeping 1.21 V.

 

But what is the difference between BIOS and UEFI?

Uefi runs security and boot loader stuff also bios cannot boot from drives larger than 2tb. Also secure boot was needed long term. Exploiting that requires physical access to PC anyway

Nope, people crapped on Apple for using EFI, there's a huge difference.

BIOS is old, very old, very very old. It might have served it purpose very well but it needed overhauling, especially for servers which is where it was designed for in the first place.

Lastly you seem to be under the impression MS created UEFI or somehow pushed it onto hardware manufacturers? This is totally false, EFI was created by Intel but was kept closed source, they handed the project over to the UEFI Forum at version 1.10 when it was open sourced. The only thing MS have had to do with UEFI is Secureboot.

If you actually know a lot about it then why in my BIOS when I turn off Legacy+UEFI and change it just to UEFI only my SSD dissapears. It also doesn't have a windows boot manager on it either so I can't turn the PC on and just boot I have to boot to my hard drive and then click the SSD to boot from

If you actually know a lot about it then why in my BIOS when I turn off Legacy+UEFI and change it just to UEFI only my SSD dissapears. It also doesn't have a windows boot manager on it either so I can't turn the PC on and just boot I have to boot to my hard drive and then click the SSD to boot from

Yeah, changing over from legacy to UEFI boot requires a reinstall as Windows has 2 different boot loaders, one for legacy BIOS and one for EFI based systems.

Also Legacy stores boot info in MBR, EFI stores it on a partition on your HDD.

The 2 are entirely incompatible with each other.

UEFI is super fast and a huge improvement, Motherboard and GPU uefi bioses rock, old simple bios is for the weak.Instead they should just fix the bloody problems not revert to old technology.

Yes, you'll have to kill the drive and reinstall, Windows will make the drive gpt automatically.

When I tried to install it before it said windows can't install to GPT drives and this says it already is when I used DISKPART to make it MBR so both the HDD and SDD were MBR but it says differently. Alright windows made them GPT but why would it classify it as Legacy as they are both the same.  post-83660-0-56764500-1438351316_thumb.j

Don't use sleep option. But this sucks, not the first UEFI vulnerability I've know.

When I tried to install it before it said windows can't install to GPT drives and this says it already is when I used DISKPART to make it MBR so both the HDD and SDD were MBR but it says differently. Alright windows made them GPT but why would it classify it as Legacy as they are both the same.  attachicon.gifunnamed.jpg

Glad I read this before I decided to switch my system from BIOS to UEFI over the weekend.

 

Somebody needs physical access to the system to exploit this, and if they have physical access to the computer they could have flashed the BIOS anyway (or taken the machine with them).
