Microsoft explains why people don't have the "Get Windows 10" icons or was not upgrading

Maybe your motherboard? I know that some people with the ASUS X99 are having problems with Windows 10.

You can force upgrade and see for yourself if you have any downsides that affects you.

 

It'd be much easier if the update tool would tell you what is preventing you from upgrading though :/

 

The Update cannot be installed because:

Sound card: driver revision too old

Graphics card: what is a graphics card?! Does not compute!

Motherboard: You chose the wrong motherboard chipset 5 years ago

All it need to do is say "CHECK YOUR DAMN DRIVERS"...

 

meh. ill check if there is any new Bioses or chipset drivers i guess

For the last couple of days I was getting the Update Error code 80240020. No idea why so I've spent most of today tinkering with things and doing a little PC clean up. Ran CCleaner which removed 126GB of junk and deleted files, deleted old programs, updated all drivers.

 

Finally found what my issue was. It was the antivirus software that was preventing the installation or blocking part of the download. So just now I did the following.

 

Deleted everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Disabled my antivirus and firewall (In my case AVG)

Opened up Command Promt as admin and typed wuauclt.exe /updatenow

 

And that finally worked! I know this was probably already posted but thought I'de share what worked for me.

This is why we need to educate people. I had to sit on the phone on hold for 2 hours to get to microsoft to say we can't help you. All the other callers were asking WHERES MY BUTTON! oh look an ISO

For the last couple of days I was getting the Update Error code 80240020. No idea why so I've spent most of today tinkering with things and doing a little PC clean up. Ran CCleaner which removed 126GB of junk and deleted files, deleted old programs, updated all drivers.

 

Finally found what my issue was. It was the antivirus software that was preventing the installation or blocking part of the download. So just now I did the following.

 

Deleted everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Disabled my antivirus and firewall (In my case AVG)

Opened up Command Promt as admin and typed wuauclt.exe /updatenow

 

And that finally worked! I know this was probably already posted but thought I'de share what worked for me.

 

If Microsoft Security Essentials is blocking the Windows 10 update...

 

Is it doing me a favour and blocking something even Microsoft software thinks is malware? :)

There's a tool to manually upgrade on microsoft's website.  I forget what it was called though.

 

Lets you upgrade too, don't have to do a clean install. (But you should anyway.)

Didnt have the notification, downloaded a program that prompted me to upgrade to windows 10, works fine. Edge is still IE in the way you use it to get chrome. You dont even get to sort your own bookmarks properly.

One surface I have upgraded, while the other one said "ready, view report" but now it shows the same thing as my desktop above.

Microsoft is not providing that information, but it is believed to be via product key and region.

That's probably the PC starting the upgrade, asking the server "am I good to start this" and the server replying "no". Thus you have a failed update.

EDIT: Installation still failed

Had same problem on my new laptop.  Downloaded win10 but kept failing on the install.  So just downloaded the windows media creation tool and made a usb drive to install from.

Correct that is what is happening. It wants to get you the update as fast as possible as soon as it is released. Sure your log gets messy, but who cares it will be cleared in Win10.

You can just force the icon to apear with a simple script and than uprade
and if the update fails just delete everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and try again by running "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" as admin.
I had to do both and after 3 times everything went fine

When it comes to operating system upgrades, I tend to opt for a "let it settle before going near it" approach. In my experience, short cuts like that tend to lead to more work in the end. I have a year to upgrade to Windows 10. I don't need it today. I don't even need it next week, or next month. Windows 7 works great, and I'm playing the waiting game because I deal with that shit at work. I don't need my work to follow me home.

Just force update using the Windows Media Creation Tool 

Current Rig:   CPU: AMD 1950X @4Ghz. Cooler: Enermax Liqtech TR4 360. Motherboard:Asus Zenith Extreme. RAM: 8GB Crucial DDR4 3666. GPU: Reference GTX 970  SSD: 250GB Samsung 970 EVO.  HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB. Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro. PSU: Corsair RM1000X. OS: Windows 10 Pro UEFI mode  (installed on SSD)

Peripherals:  Display: Acer XB272 1080p 240Hz G Sync Keyboard: Corsair K95 RGB Brown Mouse: Logitech G502 RGB Headhet: Roccat XTD 5.1 analogue

Daily Devices:Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact and 128GB iPad Pro

Ended up getting the prompt to upgrade today, need to compare the pro's and con's though.
