Screaming children on airplanes

So during the April 24th edition of WAN show, Linus was telling us about his plight that is screaming children on a packed plane. I thought I'd share this discovery with him and y'all.

 

So when my daughter was 10 months, we were flying to Mexico. While my daughter was being good (thanks in part to breastfeeding), the kid directly behind us, not so much. However, the couple that was sitting directly in front of us, who were obviously seasoned travelers, offered the kid noisy kids (and my daughter) double lollies. And by golly it worked wonders!

 

We talked with the couple in front of us after and they said that every trip they go on now they pack a number of them specifically for that purpose... and from now on, I will too.

 

For those that don't know, a lot of kids have troubles clearing the pressure in their ears on planes. That's why they say to chew gum and stuff on planes because it helps by getting you to do the things that relieve the pressure. Sucking on candy does the same thing. On top of that, kids get bored *really* easily... and candy generally makes people happy... so its a win-win. :)

I went to China quite recently. When we finished our flight and got our bags and stuff, one of the group leaders thanked the man who managed to only have his baby cry for 15-20 minutes on an 11 hour flight, only in the ascent and descent.

He was the best guy on the plane.

If you can't keep them quit don't bring them is pretty much my opinion. The method you said might work would be good if they were quit for hours because of it.

I remember my mum used to give me lollipops when we flew anywhere when I was younger. It really did help on takeoff and landing, and my gameboy helped inbetween.

Screaming children usually calms me on a plane. So does grown men with a wires on him.. JK! Little kids can sometimes add stress when trying to do work or fall asleep on a plane. I used to have the ear pressure problem really bad and I would just shove my fingers in my ears and curl up in a ball and cry quietly.

I couldn't imagine being on a plane, let alone allowing my children on one.

 

Would suck though that the kids being loud had parents that wouldn't allow you to hand them candies. :lol: Maybe toys would work too, and would probably feel far more safe to strange parents or smarter kids.

OP: that really is a great idea but I what about infants (in the 0 - 1.5 year range), can they actually suck on lollipops without any issues? I'm all for solutions that don't include handing the kid an iPad at the age of 2 in order to make them sit quietly.

I had a couple pay for my inflight entertainment/headphones once on a flight from New York to Vegas.

 

In general, it's only if the flight lasts more than 4 hours that I care, and I am fortunate enough to be sitting in the pointy end these days, so even if there is a screaming monster up there I can just drown it out by laying in bed with a glass of Dom Perignon.

As for the question, thats really a parental decision. You certainly can't force a parent to give their child anything. My daughter had no problems... and even if she did, kids under two sit on your lap during flights, so we woulda seen it instantly.

Not always an option. My aunt and uncle are international school teachers. They have to fly several times a year with both of their kids. But they pretty much figured out the tricks right away because it would be hell having long flights and screaming kids. What pisses most people off is when there is a screaming kid and the parents don't try anything at all to shut them up.

I went to China quite recently. When we finished our flight and got our bags and stuff, one of the group leaders thanked the man who managed to only have his baby cry for 15-20 minutes on an 11 hour flight, only in the ascent and descent.

He was the best guy on the plane.

Not an option then use their hand to shut them up. I get pissed if they don't shut it up in like 15-30 seconds. No excuse to let it go longer or have it happen often. Two options leave it behind or keep it quite/ down to a reasonable talking level and if it is high pitched then 0 seconds total.
