Fanless heatsink?

Is it possible to have a Be Quiet! Shadow Rock 2 without the SilentWings 2 Fan on an i3-4160 under load and have descent temps?

Define decent.

Acceptable, yes.

I wouldn't try it, nor would I recommend you trying it, but it should work okay-ish. That's a really good cooler, but without any airflow I can't imagine it works too well.

Temps will be kinda high but they shouldn't be 80+ as long as your PC has decent ventilation.

But keep in mind that I am purely guessing, so don't take my word for it. I don't recommend it.

Why would you take off the fans anyway? Is sound that important?

Well not really. I already have a define R4 and I was just curious if you can do that, Because Linus did a build with a Dark Rock Pro 3 on a 5960x.

The system wasn't entirely passively cooled though.

If you already have the Shadow Rock 2 laying around I'd do some testing, see how it works on load temps and what not. As long as you monitor it correctly, it shouldn't be risky at all.

For a passive rig, if you haven't bought stuff yet, I'd suggest getting a cooler designed for fanless use; the Thermalright HR-22 is meant for that and will easily keep the i3 cool (you can even use those on certain i7 CPUs). Something less pricey would be a Prolimatech PRO-MGH-C Megahelms, still pretty decent temps for the i3. The cheapest I'd dare going for in a fanless system, is the Zalman FX70; it's not overly expensive and for that CPU it shouldn't get that toasty.

I know. I am going to use 2 intake fans and 1 exhaust.

What makes them different than other heatsinks with fans?

Why not just have the fan on the heatsink in that case?

What makes them different than other heatsinks with fans?

They can be more heatsink for the money if you're not going to stick a fan on it in the first place.

you can as long as you have very good case airflow and a case fan on the back of the case pulling air near the cooler

What makes them different than other heatsinks with fans?

They're actually designed to dissipate heat in a specific way. Heat transfer by itself causes air to move. (Light a match, dangle a piece of paper near it & it will be drawn towards the flame) If you design a cooler around that, you can create a small breeze from a fanless heatsink.

Standard heatsinks are made to just dump heat anywhere along it's surface area & let the fans do the rest.

What makes them different than other heatsinks with fans?

mainly the spacing, the fins aren't so close together, allowing natural flow to go through easier.

The fans that come with the heatsink are near silent, how can you hear them ??

As long as you have good airflow, sure. You won't melt anything
