Experiences with non-techies

15 minutes ago, FakeKGB said:

I won't either, seeing as it doesn't exist 🙃

Also, another Experience with a Non-Techie today:

I'm walking down to AP Human Geo and I'm playing Bravely Default. Someone asks "Hey, what is that?" <referring to my 3DS>

I respond "It's a 3DS."
They go "It looks like someone put two phones together. What does it do?"
I respond with "It's a handheld game console. You can play games such as Bravely Second <gestures to screen>"
Them: "Can it use apps?"

Me: "What kind?"
Them: "The app kind."
Me: <walks away because I will be late to class>

You wouldn't believe how many people a week see my 4S and say "oh cool ipod" or something like that. I show them the sim tray and resist slapping them.

I know, but if it was "Not", that would be very fitting.

The only reason people get suspended at my school is for screaming p*nis during class (that happened today). Your school sounds a lot more interesting

Oh it is. One kid brought one of those butterfly knife combs and we went on lockdown for the whole day while the police searched the school for any other weapons. Another time, a kid fought a teacher. He had failed the class and couldn't graduate, so he was mad. My school is crazy lol

I work for a school district in the IT department.  Every day is a list of small-scale interactions with non-techies, with a few bigger ones mixed in.

Student:  My Chromebook screen is a little cracked.

Me:  Okay, bring it to the help desk and we'll give you a loaner while we fix it up.

*Chromebook comes in literally missing pieces of the LCD panel*

(This one was a different district)

Administrator:  *Calling in a panic* I just got in a half hour ago and already my computer is ridiculously slow!  I can't even function right now!

*I run down immediately*

Me:  Let me see if I can find anything that might be killing your resources, like maybe Malwarebytes (at the time and in that district, we had issues with scheduled MB scans basically pushing CPU usage right to the ceiling on older laptops that were still running like 5th or 6th gen i5s, which was the majority of teacher and low level administrator devices).

*Notice MB running in the background AND about 20 Chrome tabs across two monitors, including an active Google Meet*

Me:  ...I have some thoughts...

9th grade science, a few kids were sitting behind me arguing about which of their laptops are the best.

"mine has an i7 so it's better than your i5" etc.

eventually they google Intel CPUs or something, trying to find which of theirs is better, and what the 'best' CPU is, until  one of them drops a now classic line

"what's better than i9? i12?,"

everything about that conversation still makes me laugh

In my district, we have students who apply to be "Help Desk Interns" and come in to do Chromebook repairs during certain periods of their days.  I was supervising two of them one day while they were having an argument over CPUs.  One was insisting that he wanted to upgrade from his Core i5 laptop one day to a Core i7 "for gaming", but couldn't specify any use case in which a Core i7 and it's thread count would actually help him.  The other student sat there trying to explain how he was probably better off budgetarily going with an i5/Ryzen 5 and a decent processor for a lot of things.  The whole argument ended up going nowhere and just gave me a headache.

I think we are confused.

I recorded that video on my personal machine and I don't have obs installed yet.

Also yes my Chromebook does block inspect. But Chromebook can't have firefox.

In Kindergarten we had these stylus pens where one end of it was a stylus and the other end was a pen. We were told never to take the cap off the pen end because "it would break the ipad". Thinking back, why couldn't the school just have gotten styluses without pens instead of having the screen protector or two break a year because someone used the wrong end...

Oh and another unfortunate story about my school. So in 4th grade (they changed the system next year, I wonder why???), each kid had school provided headphones with the username and password to all of the school accounts written in permanent marker on the bag. The way the school had the computers set up, even if you didn't have that person's computer, you could still sign in to their account. So you could literally sign in to anyone's school computer and school Google account from your school laptop. Needless to say, trolling happened.

I totally would have signed into other people's accounts.

Not random people though. I'd probably sign into a friend's account, mess around with some grammar/spelling in some things, maybe change a number in another, and then leave.

I got bullied a lot in 4th grade, so I would log into those people's computers and uninstall all the applications, lol

Nah they were Macs. I just went in to the Applications folder and deleted everything.

Back then, you could just delete stuff from the System folder with your password.

Meaning you could wreck the OS to oblivion.

You can also change what your CPU identifies as very easily.

Kids would leave their Gmail accounts logged in all the time in the school library back in high school, so my MO was usually to go into their Drive and copypaste the entire Bee Movie script into a doc.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

well our schoo has about four ICT rooms each with about 30 computers, they used dell optiplexes, have admin bloced, and we each got private account, it used to e your student  number and the literal password "password", but one year ago - when you reach year 7 - they et you change it
