This is what Nvidia VXGI looks like in UE4

3D artist Byzantos has been experimenting with NVIDIA’s new dynamic GI, VXGI, integrated in a separate branch of Unreal Engine 4.6 and the results are stunning.
According to Byzantos, VXGI, though still in beta, is the best lighting engine out there. He said, “Currently the most accurate [GI] solution available, nothing comes close if you’re talking about quality versus performance,” and judging by the astonishing results, it’s hard to disagree.

Performance:
 

With the above in mind, performance was a good surprise. I have a GTX Titan GPU (not a Titan X!) and my pc can be considered ‘average’ by today’s standards. Even though VXGI can be easily set to cripple your fps (32 cones, very low trace-step etc.), if you keep things on defaults or around that range, it still allows you to have the experience without your scene becoming a slideshow. This is of course a generic impression and since polycount and scene-complexity (number of lights contributing to VXGI, shadows etc.) do impact VXGI, I guess for now performance is as good as you want it depending on your hardware and your scene-specifics.

Yup, this is one of the tools I'm using for my Master's thesis. It's incredible what Nvidia has managed to come up with as a 95% approximation of Ray Tracing (you pretty much cannot do better than this other than the hue calculation itself).

I do know this and it is a great leap forwards. But it is a showcase and the amount of time they spend detailing a pillar is way more then say one in GTA V or another popular high demanding game with an extensive world.

Take a closer look at some of the architecture of AC Unity on high/ultra and try that one again.

What kind of horsepower does it take to theoretically have that in a modern game today, like in BF4?

A 980? Two 980s? Titan X?

That's a live render and film in 60fps on a single 960. Bear in mind there are no people walking around though. CPU is also unknown (which is doing the calculations for the distance and beam occlusion).

Article says a Titan of some type. Also for the rest of that sentance, a first gen titan is still well above average, do people really see a titan as average now?

About a 980. But think about this, you can get that kind of performance from a mid range card in a year or two with the rate Nvidia is going at which isn't far away so it's something to be very excited for.
