Razer Chroma has 16.8M colors not the 512 that was reported

Jaybird

Min-Liang Tan, CEO of Razer posted to facebook with a video demonstrating that Chroma keyboards are capable of 16.8 million colors. Video in the source.

We've been getting a ton of queries on the issue of ‪#‎RGBGate‬ (some keyboards in the market are advertised as 16.8M colors but only have 512 colors) and we wanted to clarify and confirm that our Chroma keyboards have 16.8M colors.

To test your keyboard to make sure it works as advertised, just run it through spectrum cycling - the colors should blend in a smooth fashion as opposed to jittery transitions(which would be how 512 colors would look).

Now I know corsair RGB keyboards had this issue but was unaware that some people thought that the Razer Chroma keyboards also had this issue. May have been a case of mistaken identity.

re-read the artcle and its actually a marketing ploy from razer stating that their keyboards do have 16.8m color as appose to the competitor's, aka Corsair, products which only have 512.

I will do this with my cousin's K70 RGB when it comes back from RMA, since I want to see if it is really as jarring as they say it would be.

I have my doubts about the RGBGate "scandal". And for that matter, why is it that minor things that no one really cares about are now scandals?

In all seriousness, does no one understand how RGB lighting works?

2^8 colours for each LED, blended all together and then it's 2^8*2^8*2^8 = 16777216 colours total? doesn't it use PWM to control the intensity therefore the range can be achieved?

Not much happens in the world of RGB keyboards and they have to blow things out of proportion when anything remotely happens at all.

I'm interested, please post your results.

I believe some just use simple voltage control, but PWM would work as well. But if it's not working, it's a software error, unless they used some trash controller.

This is what the state of the lighting transitions are at the moment with both keyboards.

You can barely see it in the video, but the K65 is jumpy when it goes from color to color while the Blackwidow is super smooth.

Also not seen in the video is my mom talking very loud in the other room.

All the little shits who attach "gate" to any word at first sign of a small internet kerfluffle and thinking they're clever needs a good throttling, keel hauling and castration.

I bet it's Reddit or 4chan again, someone please burn them down already.

Well I'll be damned. It probably comes down to a combination of a cheap controller and using dedicated LEDs.

I think the controller they're using is fairly expensive. It may just be the software because I think what's happening is the bulbs are jumping from 100% brightness to 70% then further instead of smoothing it out with maybe 100% < 95% < 90% or something at least smoother than what it is.

Writing it in software with curves is easy though. If the controller can't make fine changes though...

I didn't make the video to make anyone feel like they bought a piece of shit. The K65 is my main keyboard and it's going to continue being my main keyboard, so why would I attempt to make it look bad?
