Noctua NF-F12 PPC fans in an automotive application

darwin006

I own a motorcycle and recently the fan for the radiator died causing it to overheat at low speeds. Naturally I looked for a stock replacement but every place I looked they wanted 400 USD this fan new. Then I thought of Noctua's industrial NF-F12 PPC fans. I found the 3000 RPM version on Amazon and brought 3 based on some quick measurements that turned out to be wrong (turns out only 2 would fit). And today I installed them using zip ties and I soldered the connector from the old fan to the two Noctua fans and it works! The fans might make some noise but I cant hear them over the exhaust..., they do for sure move alot of air and keep the bike from overheating!

I wanted to share this with the community because if it weren't for LTT I would have not known about these great fans. Thanks.

Attached is a pic that somehow ended up upside down but you can read the fans so thats a thing

Benchmarks?

Seatmarks? IDK if you would call it a bench on a motorcycle...

Well, that's exactly the kind of thing that these fans were made for! :D

That's pretty awesome!

Take that, automotive repair dealers!

I would have considered putting on fan grills to keep stuff from possibly flying into the blades (Or are they behind the radiator? Would probably still try and have 'em). Otherwise, tis all good :D

Did you get the waterproof versions? I imagine in this application that'd be handy.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

The fans are behind the radiator so Im not really worried about that. For something large to get to the fans the fairings would almost have to be off i think.

?

I'd be worried about how they deal with getting wet.

All of Noctua's industrial PPC fans are IP52 certified so they aren't waterproof but I think it should be enough for this application. If it doesn't work out I will make a post in this thread.

Yea you ought to be fine.

You'd have to submerge your bike in water to kill them, at which point there would be other things you'd have to worry about

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

There are IP67 ones too, but looking at Noctua's site those are 2000 RPM.

You might want to secure them better to reduce vibrations or use rubber cornerpads or something because they would be almost silent when secured propely, also less vibrations would be beneficial for their lifespan.

The zip ties are tight enough that the fans wont vibrate on the radiator. And as far as the fans making noise, there is no way I will hear them over the sound of my aftermarket exhaust... Also if you where to use these in a computer unless you under volt them a lot these fans wont be quite. I might be able to do something to reduce vibrations but the fans are on a motorcycle and the roads aren't really that smooth around here.

Kinda worried the zipties might melt...

I don't know how hot that rad is gonna get but zipties have a melting point of 85-90 degrees C
