i7-5930k or i7-4960x?

I can't seem to find any differences in the two processors besides the slight speed and TDP differences. The 4960x costs almost twice as much though. Can anyone tell me why this is and if it would even be worth it to get the 4960x?

4960x is based off of Ivy Bridge, 5930K is based off of Haswell.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

cost of the platform. with the 5930K youll need an x99 motherboard and ddr 4 with the 4960X youll only need x79 and ddr3 (much cheaper)

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

The 4960X has never been worth it. It costs $1000 so that you can have a CPU with an "X" at the end, that's literally the only reason it exists. For X79 the 4930K has always been the highest "real" option.

The 5930K isn't really worth it either, just get the 5820K unless you will run quad graphics cards. The only difference between the two is the number of PCIe lanes.

The 4960x is the extreme CPU from old-gen. The 5930k is a step down from extreme and is from current gen.

Get the 5930K. It's newer, cheaper, and about the same power as the 4960X.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

Thanks for the answers. I am getting the 5820k btw. I just wanted to know why the 4960x was so pricey compared to a newer card with pretty much the same specs

The 4960X is pricey, because it has that "X" at the back, it is an Xtreme version for enthusiasts, who don't care about the price or people who absolutely need the extra few MB of CPU cache. The same story is with the new 5960X, which however is more compelling, since it has 2 extra cores compared to the other two processors, the 5820K and 5930K.

For gaming and general use, the 5820K is more than enough, unless you want to have the absolute best. Pair that with some nice DDR4 2400MHz RAM, a nice X99 board (the MSI x99 SLI is a great budget option) and you will be good to go.

And if u want quad graphics, there is no reason that you cant fork out an extra $400-500 for a 5960X

Just curious. Do you need it? If you're not video editing or rendering/streaming then take a step down and get an i5 4690 with an H97.

The 5930K is awesome! I had this on my OCing machine and just changed to a 5960X because of the better Physics score but I enjoyed my sample. OCs stable to 4.7GHz and has 40 native PCIe lanes. Hehe mine lies atm in the drawer waiting on a new system :).

But seriously, where did u get the money to spend $1600 on CPUs?

Not sure yet, but the idea is very tempting since I have a D5 variable pump and reservoir and a 360mm EK rad laying around here hehe :).

Well, I´m blessed with a very good job. I guess I was at the right time at the right spot :) .

I wish I could stop spending that much money on hardware lol :) . But I just enjoy building new and enthusiast PCs I guess.

But really if you just go for 2way SLI or CF these days and you want to keep that option for more, no matter if it´s a 3rd GPU, M.2 or what ever it is, go X99. The prices aren´t that brutal looking at it from a perspective compared to an i7 4790K. The CPU costs a bit more and the DDR4 RAM but that´s it. Many X99 boards come at very reasonable price tags. Of course X99 is not the best choice for everybody... if people live on tighter budgets and i5 and consumer grade stuff is fine. But if a person has the money to spend, why not enjoy this bonus of getting hardware of the enthusiast sector.
