Went to Reddit, saw this, actually like the fact even people who aren't that badly affected by the 0.5gb of VRAM are returning their 970s to join the bandwagon. Inb4 a fix (maybe?). Then whose laughing now.

I'm fine with a 970 so this doesn't bother me. :D

I hope this means the price will drop dramatically. I would be as giddy as a school girl!

Some 970 users basically think like this. "Max VRAM ever used, 2GB, 0.5gb "crisis" goes viral, TIME TO REFUND!"

Please return, I would love a slightly used one to replace my r9 270! :D

Time to return my other 970 that's still sealed in box and get an open boxed one :D

Its good to refund because NVIDIA fucked us, you can't say that a gpu has 4GB of VRAM when it has 3.5, even if you don't use it

I was reading somewhere that the 970 actually has 4GB. 3.5 is isolated from the 0.5 so technically it does have 4GB but it isn't activated I guess? A nVidia technician also said the GTX 970 has what a GTX 980 has but those 2 "thingys" aren't activated so thats what differs a 970 from a 980, other than that I guess its the same card. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yeah it has 4GB of VRAM, but they are not usable becuase of that error with the memory controller

But yeh, the point of this thread is to point out the GTX 970, other than memory issues its still a fuckgood of a card and that idiots are missing out and giving others a good opportunity to get a good card at a good price. I've been paying attention to my local classifieds and I've seen 970s flipped for around $300.

hmm, if the 970s drop everywhere :D

I personally don't mind only having 3.5gb or the coil whine because it is minimal. They run quiet&cool, and is great performers. My build is ready for another one of these.

I thought the whole lying phiasco was about the Rops not the ram and that's why they were returning then.

as technically they do have 4gb vram it's just split into a 3.5gb full bandwidth modal and a 500mb low speed one.

its true though that 2 months ago this was the best card for your money the true sweetspot titan killing enthusiast card.. and now it's treated like an aids infested monkey!!

People who reported an issue because they actually went past 3.5gigs, I see why they would return. People like me who just do 1080p, what the hell you don't even need it.

This is false, all 4GB of the VRAM is usable. .5gb is just seperated due to the missing L2 cache. You have 3.5gb and .5gb the .5gb being a slower portion. It does get used after the 3.5b gets used and the memory speed is then averaged.

I know that is usable but with lame speeds so its dropping frames and therefor not usable for gaming

It's plenty usable for gaming, I have tested this myself with 4k DSR. It's averaged with the other 3.5gb, it's not as good as 4GB of full speed but it works just fine.

You don't get it, if a company claims that they are selling 4GB of VRAM they should deliver 4GB of VRAM that are just normally usable, not 3.5GB of fast VRAM, and .5 of slow VRAM. If we don't bitch about stuff like this NVIDIA would continue to do things like that

I think its more like 1/16th for the actual bandwidth. the first 3.5GB is striped together on a 224 bit bus. the last 0.5GB is on a 32 bit bus.

technically its 4GB of Vram, with a 256bit bus, but only one of the two partitions of Vram (3.5 or 0.5) can be accessed at a time during a read/write cycle. if the 0.5GB partition is accessed sparingly for fluff data, its probably ok. if its being accessed every other write cycle then expect stutter city. Windows controls how often its accessed so I'm guessing Nvidia are begging/throwing money at microsoft for help on that one.
