94c GPU temp, ASUS won't RMA

Mitch3k

I purchased a R9 290 a while back, kickass card. However it get up to very high temps during gaming high 80s to mid 90s. I've tried to RMA it as something is obviously wrong but ASUS won't RMA unless temps exceed 95c which is near impossible due to thermal throttling. So that leads me to my first question, do you think its a poor application of the thermal paste causing this, and do you think it would be wise to replace it myself. Second question, does the asus warranty allow for a thermal paste swap?

EDIT: Its a DirectCU II cooler card.

Try forcing the fans to 100% and see if that helps. Replacing the thermal paste is a cheap and easy fix if it works.

I would replace the thermal paste and if your case supports it, put a fan somewhere that blows cool air into the GPU blower

These reference cards run very hot. Even with a Direct CUII cooler.

True that! if its a reference card then nothing is wrong, also if you replace the thermal compound that will void your warranty.

Yes, this would help however this would be a bit counter productive as the biggest reason I'd like it cooler is so it doesn't run so loud.

Take a pic of your case and add the fans to it so we can see the airflow

Bad case airflow?

H440 with stock fan config, I've heard of people with the same card and same case get much lower temps.

Thats strange DirectCU II should not run that hot.. maybe post a picture of your PC internals and lets see how much space there is inside?

Also are you using any software to OC it? try to crank up the fan a bit.

PS: yes it will void the warranty if you take the screws off unfortunately :(

Well a big part of the reason I'd like to have it run cooler is to have it also run quester, cranking the fans would then only fix half of my problem :)

I had the same on my 290x the reason is asus used a gtx780 cooler on the 200 series amd card's that cooler is not designed for that chip and that's the reason why it's overheating,The only working cooler is the Sapphire tri-x and the gigabyte model. But keep in mind that the 200 series are spaceheaters :P

It's hotter than it should be. Before I went with a kraken g10, temps were in low 80s at stock clocks under full load. I applied some tx-4 paste and temps dropped under load to mid-high 70s at stock clocks. 94 is crazy unless you are running furmark, you are overclocking heavily or your case has poor airflow.
