Is 1440p Worth it?

ATLASINCARNATE

I am currently wondering if 1440p is worth it Vs 1080p. I am aware the image looks sharper, but 1080 monitors are a lot easier to drive, along with the fact that most 1080 monitors come at 120-144 hz. I am pretty sure there is only one 1440p monitor that has a 144 hz refresh rate, but it is also a TN panel. What do you guys think? Also maybe some recommendations for good monitors at those resolutions? Thank you.

Would like to clear up - most 1080p monitors still use 60Hz refresh rates.

A 1440p monitor should have an IPS panel IMO. 1808p IPS is better than 1440p TN as the viewing angles on a more dense screen need to be perfect. I would just get 1080p IPS and make it around 24" in diagonal length,

If you have the horsepower to drive that resolution, then yes I think it's worth it. 1440p monitors will be more expensive than most 1080p monitors though - keep that in mind.

What kind of things are you looking for in a monitor? IPS? Fast response times? High refresh rates?

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

1440p downscaling with DSR/VSR onto a 1080p monitor is quite nice. the price for a good 1440p monitor is tough to swallow if you aren't sitting close enough to enjoy the difference, or the panel is small.

IPS is a must. Refresh rate 60 hz and response time isn't a huge deal, I dont play a lot of FPS games

Unless the 1440p is at the same size, I would say no. Because the only reason you are upgrading is sharpness right? The ppi on a 24" 1080p is 105, the ppi on a 27" 1440p is 109. Not that big of a difference. Wait for 24-25" 1440p monitors.

I have 2 Korean 1440p monitors on my desk. They're fantastic for non-gaming. They're great for gaming. (Though I only use one for gaming.) I hate it when I'm forced to use 1080p. But, yes, you need a beefy GPU.

There are at least two or three TN 1440p at 144hz...

Also, in a few months you should expect to see a few ips 1440p at 1444hz, as well as more free synch and g synch models.

Still new, but learning

Get a korean X-Star/QNIZ PLS panel off eBay or wherever you can. I used my X-STAR for 1.5 years and loved it. The only reason why I'm not using it anymore is because I recently went 4K =)

Those PLS (one dual link input) can be OCed to higher frequencies. My monitor in particular can overlock to 96Hz.

If you can push 120hz+ on 1440p (Low settings or high settings doesn't matter)

I'd do it,

Hell... It's about time.

Yes.

Yes it is.

1440 offers over 70% the total pixel count of 1080.

4K is worth it.

1440 is great "bang-for-buck" - a compromise between sane system builds and beautiful graphics

1080 is budget spec - buy if you don't game often enough to justify that much cash on gaming.

Lets look at the pixel count:

720  = 972800 Px (46% 1080)

1080 = 2073600 Px (100% 1080)

1440 = 3686400 Px (177% 1080)

2160 = 8294400 Px (400% 1080)

You could say this is all really irelvant and focus only on DPI.

So if you have a 40 inch 4k monitor, its going to look as clear and as sharp at the same viewing distance as a 20 inch 1080 monitor or a 28 inch 1440 monitor

Likewise if you have a 24inch 1080 and find the clarity good but want a larger viewing area then roughly a 32 inch screen at 1440 would be a good step, slightly sharper but bigger.

Given that most 1440 screens are 27inch this provides added clarity over a 1080 screen but also provides a much crisper and clearer image.

Don't buy a super-high refresh rate TN panel unless you play twitch FPS quite regularly.

I have a 10-bit 4k TN panel, brilliant colours, response time and viewing angles, the only angle it shifts at is from above. side to side Its huge.

I don't want this thread to be about TN vs. IPS.

edit:

you know what... maybe I do

I have had:

single 1080 TN

triple 1080 TN

21:9 IPS

144hz 1080

4k TN

The 4k TN looks the best. hands down.

the 144hz panel I had compromised too much on colour. you couldn't tell the difference between a read or un-read notification on Facebook. sure it was amazingly smooth to look at and gave you a huge advantage in FPS' - going back to 60hz felt like I had to learn how to aim all over again... but I don't competitively play FPS...

What is important to you in a monitor and what do you use it for?
