I usually buy as I go along, and almost always start with CPU and Motherboard. I ensure however that there will not be a new product line to be released in the near future.

The first component I bought desktop wise was a 3770K, otherwise it would be a 1066mhz 4GB ddr3 stick of laptop ram.

The Wannabe is no longer. Replaced by the Flotilla. If you replace every part of a computer is it still the same computer?

I bought everything at the same time. I had to wait a few days for the RAM and case to come in to NCIX, though.
