For me I got a budget build prebuild for me and then I bought my new MSI 970 4GB and then my CX750M power supply and then my MSI Gaming G45 Motherboard and then 8GB of DDR3 memory.

I usually buy as I go along, and almost always start with CPU and Motherboard. I ensure however that there will not be a new product line to be released in the near future. 

 

The first component I bought desktop wise was a 3770K, otherwise it would be a 1066mhz 4GB ddr3 stick of laptop ram.

Technically speaking... My 120G EVO, since I was planning on using it when (and if) I got a rig (close to 3/4 of a year apart from the SSD and my rig). But, legitimately, I think it was the CPU and motherboard.

I bought a geforce 4 MX 440SE 64MB  for an old PII that I don't remember how I got. Am I understanding correctly? Is this asking about the first PC component of all time?

The very first part i bought was my psu (cx430m)

 The Wannabe is no longer. Replaced by the Flotilla. If you replace every part of a computer is it still the same computer?

the first pc part i purchased was a matrox m3D 4mb graphics card to install in my dad's pentium 166mmx to play motocross madness  :)

My first upgrade... I upgraded my Dell Dimension 2400 from 256MB to 1GB... I remember it being SO much faster!.. Played Age of Empires easily, and SIMS!
