[Tutorial] How to make your 900 Series Video Card have a 0% fan mode!

Lays

If you used something other than win 10 it may work, or you could try doing what that other guy mentioned about flashing in DOS.

If the card is working and showing you the BIOS, it's most likely windows or a driver that is messed up, and not the card.  (it could be the card too, but the fact that it's working at all is a good sign)

So it sorta worked but not really. I reinstalled Win8.1, and I can actually get into windows now, so that's good. Then I reinstalled all the tools to reflash the bios to the stock one, and I did succesfully. There's a whole crap ton of problems though. I can't play any games. I installed Minecraft (don't hurt me, it was the only game that I could download within 5 mins) and it'll just crash with a bunch of errors. There's also f.lux not working. It just doesn't work, I can slide the brightness thing up and down, but it won't do anything. Not to forget Speccy doesn't show the temps of the card, it just says it's there, and there's literally no information at all. Geforce Expereicne also doesn't update, I installed and restarted the computer like 5 times, it still says I need to update. Can't even go into any other tabs other than "Drivers" too. Sorry if I'm asking for way too much help here, it just seems like you could help me fix my problem, and I'm kinda desperate.

@HashtagFTW did you disable it in device manager before flashing it, and then reboot and renable it in device manager? It's sounds like you didn't enable the gpu back, which is why things aren't recognizing it.

I did disable it before flashing it, and I also re-enabled it. But I did just notice that there was a yellow "error" sign next to the name. Also recommended resolution is 1024 x 768 for some reason.

So it sounds like its not being recognised by Windows, but it is functioning in VGA mode - so its not bricked.

If you go into msinfo32, what does it show under Components > Display ?

Geforce Experience isnt a reliable way to install the driver, maybe just try right clicking it in Device Manager and Update Driver, to see if you have any more luck with the Microsoft supplied driver?

Thanks for the suggestion but I fixed it literally minutes ago! All I had to do was download this bios http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/162914/zotac-gtx970-4096-140910.htmland flash it, BOOM! Fixed. I tried your suggestion before this fix, but all it said was that the drivers were up to date.

And also @Lays thank you so much for trying to help me fix this, I really couldn't have fixed it without amazing members like you and @Jarsky

Did I do something horribly wrong? Or is my case just a piece of shit? I have some kind of Sharkoon case with 2 front Noctua NF-F12s at around 1000 RPM and 2 NF-A14s at 600 RPM. At idle with 0% fan speed my card runs at about 60 degrees Celsius and often ramps up the fan a bit to cool down. How come my card is constantly stressed that it heats up to 60 degrees? I have no overclocks at all, everything is at standard and temp target is at 80 Celsius.

Is this possible on Kepler? (ie. GTX 780)

I have a EVGA gtx 780ti. I succeeded in reflashing my card however, MSI afterburner will not let the fan speed go below 29%. Is this just because it doesn't work on my card or is AB being retarded?

Do you think this is safe to do with a GTX 760?

You'll need Kepler Bios Tweaker http://www.overclock.net/t/1452223/kepler-bios-tweaker-v1-26-v1-27-added-tdp-unlock-gtx-780ti-780-titan-gtx770

That's normal, my cards get to around 60 as well.

There's a reason why almost all Nvidia "0% fan" cards have their fans turn on at around 60-65C, because that's usually what they seem to hit when fans are turned off under desktop load (especially if you have multiple monitors)

Linus mentioned in the video here that it's perfectly OK:

Oh thanks for the help! I was a bit worried, I didn't look at the whole video because I wanted to get on the work right away and get the right links from the post. I adjusted the hysteresis a bit and it all works perfectly fine now. Amazing! I love your guide. Now my microphone recordings won't pick up tons and tons of static noise anymore.

Just did this on my EVGA 750 Ti, works like a charm, need to launch AfterBurner at startup for the custom fan curve, but even without it could go below the previous minimum of 40%. It wasn't really loud but it was clearly the loudest thing in my computer, and it maxes out at 44°C during youtube playback.

Try using one of these versions of nvflash.

I am not sure of the cooler I had on my old AMD 2500+ Barton but it sounded pretty loud like the one in this video.  So with that said I of course don't need a zero fan mode for any of my video cards or cpus I use.  I am of the belief that more noise and fan power is good.  I want to hear the air flowing through my system.  I want it working hard to keep things cool all the time. :)

I've done this and it works great, but as far as I understand Afterburner controls fan speed, what will happen if I switch to another OS, will fans start spinning as they should?

Hey there, just one more little question. I currently have my fans running at 28% because I'm not a fan of them ramping up every 10 minutes. The card cools down to about 55 Celsius and then turns the fans off, when it reaches 65, the fans turn on for a brief moment and then when it reaches 55 they turn back off again. Is this supposed to happen? How can I make sure the fans don't ramp up to immense RPMs when I turn them off? Sometimes I just hear them speed up massively from 0%.

I believe you can change the thing in your fan curve called "temperature hysteresis" to ~10-15 and it will fix this.  (or atleast Linus said it should)

Yeah that's the thing that is happening. It heats up to about 65 then the fans turn on and it cools down to about 50-55 and then the fans turn off again after which the cycle repeats itself.
