Good news....worth reading

On may 24th, 1970, a Russian research project started on the Kola Peninsula. The goal was to basically drill as deep as possible. The project was eventually abandoned in 2005 due to a lack of funding.

Several bore-holes were drilled, branching from a main hole. The deepest point was reached in 1989 and was at a depth of 12,262 meters, 40,230 ft for us Americans....that's 7.6 Miles...had to mention that because our units of measurement are not Base 10, and you need to do math to come to that conclusion.

ANYWAY

On that hole, they expected to reach a depth of 15,000 meters (49,000 ft) by 1993. Problem was, the temperatures at this depth were expect to be around 100c (boiling point), but ended up being almost twice that. Drilling past 12,262 meters was determined to be not possible , as the temperature would be at least 300c by 15,000 meters, and it would be too hot for the drilling equipment. Thus, this hole was abandoned in 1992.

The project was abandoned due to funding, but that was 13 years after the they reached the depth limit.
