Holiday 2014 Buyer's Guide - Full Component List

sweet build advice.  i am going with parts out of the "Game On" ~$1700 System (Luxurious & more "futureproof").  i made some cosmetic choices and went non sli since im only going to be driving my 27hz 1080p 55" tv.  i figure one card more then enough.

so cinematic

Although, I'd suggest upgrading to a 720p for the full cinematic experience.

as others have mentionned, these build are all terrible imho...

the new pentium wont even launch the new call of duty and will struggle to just run modern games at 30fps quite often...

the other build is the worst...wtf with that old amd cpu that youll have to overclock and shit?! why not just re-use the motherboard from the first build and slap a core i5-4440 on it?!?!?! this is terrible!

also none of these build need 16gb of ram...all the storage choices are very arguable...only thing i can agree with is the gpu choice and i would pick the ''not asus strix'' gtx970

There are a good amount of games that run just fine on the pentium K. Even a heavy hitters like Hitman absolution, Star Citizen, CS:GO perform all really well with this CPU. Sure, maybe some games don't. Linus said in the video as well, perhaps in the future the 4 core will be better.

I bought an 8GB kit of Hyper X Fury Ram and the guy at the store tried to tell me that "this ram might overheat and weld to the motherboard"

Oh, and the ASUS strix is possibly one of the worst 970s...

a cheaper, using only a mix of Amazon, Newegg and NCIX build that where he spent on the cooler and overpriced out dated socket, pretty much makes up the difference from a six core to a intel Quad core which would perform much better.

in a 500$ PC an SSD isn't really a must but i can see where he was going dispite the fact I can throw a 260x in a 350$ build

Pretty much cheaper and you can probably throw in an SSD too for cheaper then what what it came up to in the video. with a R9 280 over a 260x.

The $2000 dollar video I didn't even watch because of those other two builds.

Say what you want but I think it was poorly done, even in our Canada builds with our 12% tax on top of that 600$ price tag putting with shipping near a 700$ price tag.

A few odd choices in there IMO. I wouldn't go for an SSD for a budget build, it can easily be added later on and doesn't help with the performance. I still view SSDs as a luxury for most PCs, something that is incredibly nice to have but not a must. I also wouldn't step up to a 480GB SSD for the high end build, 240GB still seems plenty to me and you can put that money somewhere else or just save it.

Can i have a question? What if you somehow pick intel g3258 and to go with GTX980 or 970? would it be so much bottle neck? i really like it and i really dislike i5 becose no hypertreding and so much more that g3258.
Also WD green have just 5400rpm? doesnt that efect speed a lot(something with 7200 would be better)? doesnt want to bother @@LinusTech ,but i be glad to hear his opinion and your guys as well  ;)

Yes a G3258 will bottleneck a 970 in a lot of games; but it also depends what games you're talking about. In games like Battlefield 4, which utilize more than 4 cores, yes.

And an i5 is FAR better than a G3258 in gaming.

And yes, Greens are a silly choice, Caviar Blues or Seagate Barracudas would be a better choice; but if you want a capacity more than 1/2gb then your only option is to go with Greens (or overpriced blacks).

You can and it'll be awesome, but I'd get a more matched cpu like a 6core amd if you don't have $200 for a 4 core Intel.

It may produce lower minimums in some games but should still be really good overall.

I was thinking like overclock the g3258 and get sus board becose i never OC. and than for the games i would love to play on all ultra in 1080p/1440p. for the games i want to play like watch dogs, AC unity GTA5 and i would like to stream them as well. maybe record but i was thinking more like get avermedia portable for this.

Why the Z87-A in the TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR build?

You'll be running your SLI with dual x8....

PCIe 3.0 x8 (or 2.0x8 -- 3.0x4) won't bottleneck any current GPUs.

Although, I do question the Z87 part as Z97 isn't really more expensive and officially supports Devils canyon as well as Broadwell (while z87 requires an update for DC that may or may not come preinstalled).

Not anytime soon -- last I saw, it was rumored to release around February.

Alright thanks. So really for gaming at 1440p 970sli is more then viable Im sure. And for the money compared to a 980 sli setup it just isnt worth forking out the extra money on that right? Even if you had the money for 980 sli it still doesnt warrant the little performance increase correct? Better off saving the money for something else or you can buy a third 970 for the price of 2 980s.

Well, three way SLI is stupid, and unless you go to the X99 platform (or a $300+ mobo w/ a PLX chip) you won't be going three way. But a single 980 can do 1440p 60fps in most current games, so SLI 970s will be more than enough. I'd just assume go SLI 970s and then upgrade to a 4k display / true 4k ready cards.

Yeah seems nowadays that three way sli just isnt worth the investment with how poor the scaling is. I dont see myself personally ever going 4k for at least a few years. I quite like 1440p and was a nice step up from 1080p. I have tried 4k before and I just dont see the point upgrading to that for some time. 1440p seems already plenty for daily use and the resolution seems to be a nice sweet spot between 1080p and 4k.  A nice balance as you dont have to spend a fortune to game at 1440p to get a reasonable playable game. Thanks again for your input. Most likely will buy a msi evga or gigabyte 970, probably wont consider Asus. Any thoughts on those companies? My Asus gtx 570 had constant issues from the day I bought it. It could have been the board or the drivers. Never could pin point the problem.
