Holiday 2014 Buyer's Guide - Full Component List

For option 3 I personally would go for a H220 or H220X, so eventually you could make a loop.

Everything can be installed right out the box for the $500 build, right? (By that I mean no extra parts)

ehat do you mean? And there are better options at $500 than the one given (especially depending on what games you play)

Well, if there could be any improvements (I really want max performance with a <500 budget), than here are the games I plan on playing:

Watch Dogs

GTA 5

Minecraft

League of Legends

CS:GO

And I'm kind of doubting the dual core in the Pentium. That is because I plan on recording/making content, and it might not be the best. If there can be any improvements to specifically make performance the best, I would like them. It is suggested that the price be around 450.

@NoticeMeRage pretty much anything from Msi, gigabyte, or asus is fine. (I still can't login to the site on my computer, so I won't be able to link any specifics.)

Well, I'd rather get a better case and a decent psu then the one Linus chose, and I'd much rather have an r9 270 over a 260x+an ssd.

Linus i can only say..watch and learn . rofl your 1000$ build with fx 6300 only 'couse it can overclock'

I'm honestly surprised he hasn't taken this video down.  I've been watching Linus for awhile now, and this is the worst video he has ever released and for him to put his name and reputation behind those builds is unfathomable.  All of the recommendations from members on this forum are better at every price point than the builds Linus recommended.

I feel like he used MSRP for all his prices or something.  Which is silly because if you are building a PC, you don't buy MSRP. You pretty much always get better than MSRP buying online. By a large margin.

I mean, then again, he can't really go on bundle sales for his guide. But still, his $1000 is worse than buying pre-built.

I agree, it is kind of stupid, I think he should have done it as a more of a build guide for right now, and just giving alternatives for cpu/gpu/mobo/case and let people decide based on local prices at the time of purchase.

Go to Google, type what you want to search for and then put Linus tech tips afterwards. You can also use Google to actually search the forums themselves, but I usually find everything with just including Linus/linus tech tips in the search.

I've decided to change it up a bit, and get a SPEC-01 with a CX430. But, I am sticking with the pentium and pretty sure I'm sticking with this motherboard. The graphics card - I still have some options like the GTX 750ti, R7 265, or R9 270.

You have a responsibility Linus/nick, you've reached a level of attention where you have people following your builds. You can't just say "it's only an option" and then make something stupid like a FX-6300 + GTX970 and perpetuate the dellusion that CPU doesn't matter and you can combine devices this inbalanced.

You still haven't responded i believe, so please either @LinusTech @nicklmg provide arguments why you thought this was a good idea.

Upgrade your gpu.

Get a cooler master hyper 212 (if you don't already have an aftermarket cooler) and overclock your current cpu.

Get a 23"+ 1080p monitor.

Hello and welcome to the forum!  In order for someone to see that you have replied, you need to quote or "@" them.

I agree with dj,

First of all, don't pay attention to AC:Unity, its just a mess, plain and simple, even ridiculously high end machines have problems with it, its just not a good barometer of performance because it performs poorly on everything.

That CPU is still plenty strong, especially when overclocked.  If you haven't overclocked it yet, now is the time to do so.  Buy a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO for $30 and you can hit really good overclocks.

Your GPU is the weak link in your build, that is what you should look to upgrade.  I highly recommend an R9 290, or if you can afford, GTX 970.

Also, buying a 1080p monitor is something you should look into.  There are some excellent deals on very good IPS Panel monitors for around the $100 mark.

Motherboard is good, CPU is good, cooler is good.  Overclock that bad boy!  Its supposed to be an incredible overclocker and you can probably squeeze another couple years out of the CPU and motherboard before having to upgrade, maybe even longer if games continue to work so well on 2-4 strong cores.

Yes, a 970 is seriously amazing bang for buck.  I recommend EVGA, or Gigabyte, but its so popular that any 970 you can get your hands on right now is a good 970.

Right now, your best upgrades are #1 GPU, #2 Monitor.

Here are a few good monitors:

AOC I2269VW - $120

LG23MP55HQ-P - $137

Asus VS239H-P - $140

Depending how crazy you want to go:

LG 29UM65-P - $300

Asus PB278Q - $435

Monitor Porn:

Asus ROG Swift - $800

LG 34UM94-P - $900

LG 34UC97-S - $1300

I will try to get Evga or gigabyte as you suggested. My gpu right now is msi and god knows it gets hot so fast T_T.So any solution about being able to play games on auto mode on gpu? Evga or gigabyte will solve this?.About monitor yes it seems buying gtx 970 or gtx 980 only for 19in is waste.
