Forgot thermal paste on h100i

It comes preapplied on the h100i, no? 

 

And yes, it would make a huge difference. If you're idling at 40, then its probably pre applied.

The thermal paste comes pre applied on the cpu block if you bought it new. Or the cooler isn't mounted correctly and you would need the washer mod.

40 idles is too hot IMO I get 45C on Load rendering video 100% usage

It depends on the cpu, and ambient temps.

I wouldn't bother, most TIM on the market have very similar real life performance and AS5 actually has one of the worst thermal conductivity (measured myself and compared to a few others) contrary to advertised- just goes to show that marketing specs don't mean much.

You will burn the cold plate.
