Technology things your school does wrong

Dude

30 MINUTES?! I am so sorry...

It's driving me absolutely insane every time i have to use a computer... My computer boots in about 2 minutes here at home and even that is annoying (HDD. no SSD)

One time i even pulled out a flash drive from my pocket and i told the teacher that if i used it i could start working in just 3-4 minutes... (Fedora)

But i wasn't allowed... Free country my arse..

I think both my school and your uni have the same shitty Dell laptops.

hey as long as you're not using techswede's awful computers that take half an hour to boot, it'll be fine

THEY ARE NOT MINE! I want nothing to do with them  :o

1. May be getting a bunch more chromebooks.

2. Still uses overhead projectors

3. Has shitty projectors that don't support most modern connections (they mainly just support vga, though some support dvi)

4. Has computers from the early 2000s that take around 10 minutes to boot up, and another 10-20 to log in, most of them don't even have 1gb of ram, that and they are running windows xp with shitloads of background programs all over the place.

The thing that's even worse is that before i started going to school.. I bought a 7737... (Boot times aren't bad.. But i've had a repair tech out here twice now in the span of 4 months)

My 5th grade teacher had one installed, I think it was rare if he used the interactive part... But what's so bad about it? (I'M GETTING YOU STARTED!!! I'M AN AWFUL PERSON!!)

In one of the chemistry labs the Promethean board has a purple hue to it. The main computers, whilst running sandybridge pentiums, have all been set so that we cannot download chrome, opera or anything else, so we have to use either IE or Firefox, but YouTube only works on IE, so everybody uses that. Also, us 6th formers are given permission to use the youtubez yet almost every day it is blocked as the system is reset for no reason, yet you can get it 30s before.

Oh and my school uses a proxy server that blocks a lot of websites-Reddit is useful when you are a few days ahead in your work schedule-on the Ipads that does something-Im pretty sure it scans through it- that makes searching take several minutes at times especially at home where I have 3/1 internet(schools has 30/25).

multipoint 2011 on i7's with 16gb of ram running 6 stations per 1 multipoint server. Oh and they never turn them off, and when 6 people want to use "grooveshark" or even 6 of us want to just use Chrome or Firefox, or just move your cursors you get the lovely teleporting cursor problem along with 2 of our servers for multipoint already dead. Perfectly good and awesome i7's killed in a matter of 1-2 years. and all of our projectors/promethean boards are all at messed up resolutions

EDIT:

If we ever get ipads or tablets and we are on the school network I'm just gonna tether from my phone if I can because of the websites that are blocked, yet they don't install adblock or black any of the dumb ads like the porn ads.

They're expensive and unintuitive wall tumours which should simply be replaced with tablets with PowerPoint or some variation on them so that the students don't have to watch the whiteboard spaz out.

My school spent 50k on iPads for the youngest year whilst the head teacher told me they had to make 500k budget cuts in the same year. They are the only year that has them and you only see them playing their stupid little games all day- real productive and a great investment..

Having a video card with some wide ass connector that's purple (Anyone have any idea what this is called?)

Using VPS's for the school computers and only having a 160GB's on the host server.

Looking for a Programming Project take a look here!

Tech stuff my school/college department does wrong:

  • Not maintaining their PCs properly (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/206811-pc-cleaning-horror-thread/)
  • Not replacing/upgrading the PCs when they reach obsolecence (we're still using Atoms with CRT monitors for webdev)
  • Not finding a way to get around the rules surrounding equipment procurement
  • Getting Macs
  • Setting the maximum number of connections on the wifi to 50 devices with a 3 hour IP lease (I need to reset it every few hours when it runs out of IP addresses)
  • Not setting aside a budget after we requested for 30 new mice (we're still using ball mice)

Outdated machines that barely turn on before class starts. A wireless network that can be decent at times, but only when less than 50 people are using it(spoiler, there are 1900 kids at my school). And lastly, the network security system that my school has is so bad that you can get around it so simply that a child of 8 figured it out. (You literally press the power button and midway through it shutting down, you cancels the shutdown and gain full access to everything on the network. Literally everything, teachers files, network admin stuff, and you can access any website at all.)

Something, something, something, famous quote, computer specs, and stuff...

And this will work even with domains? If so, just to reconfirm...

- Start shutting down computer

- When preparing for shutdown (closing programs) I press the power button again

- FREEDOM

Gives us Android tablets instead of Windows ones.

We have a Samsung "smart-class",what can I say. -.-

(when everything we do is actually on Windows)

Same thing. Our school has millions of Samsung tablets.

At the start of this school year the set up a wifi network, covering the whole school, but as in our school there are 2000 it became horribly slow. The IT guys in our school are ok, but the teacher are worse. One teacher calls the IT People every lesson, to complain, one time she had forgot to turn the sound on so she ordered that she received a brand new laptop, and it worked then because the sound wasn't muted
