Technology things your school does wrong

Dude

Our school lets us bring laptops to school but has a strict no macbook rule because windows software won't run on it. Uh bootcamp much?

Took me so fucking long to argue with my parents to convince them that a macbook WILL work and guess what, I contacted the head of department for the IT division in my school and he said bootcamp is totally okay.

THEN WHY PRINT ON PAPER THAT MACBOOKS ARE NOT ALLOWED > :(

Because school IT departments are clueless and careless simultaneously.

This, and disabling the start menu almost entirely (you can still launch programs though a web interface which is awful, on IE, with the search engine set to bing, with no way to change it) It sucks :(

In the Netherlands. The reason they didn't have the network set up was because they bought a new building and had to move many many PC's..

In what city?

Go to your web browser and type in c:/ and then you can access the files on the computer.

Because he had a hard drive.

This thread is gold

Behold, my uni's computers everyone. Running Windows 2000, yes "2000", that obscure version, VGA Dell monitors , P4's 512mb of Ram 40Gb Hard drives. What is funny is that they hired a "IT Security manager" to keep the network safe, little did they know I was already throwing porn on videoprojectors and stealing tests from the teacher's computers. Like really, Windows 2000 ? That's the fucking spongebob of OS'es, it has so many holes i don't even need to run Kali to penetrate them.

Wait what

Still works, but you have to type in www.google.co.uk and there's no way to set it as the default search engine :(

We (2000 people) rely on external harddrives for running VMs. As I forgot my USB-Cable the first day I went to the IT-Departement for getting a replacement cable. They told me with absolute seriousness, that they had already given out all 5 of their usb cables.

Also trying to run multiple of said VMs (at least 2 running linux and another 2 running windows server or windows 7) at the same time on a i7 970 and 8 gigs of RAM. Because 2.5 gigs for a Windows Server will totally be enough...

btw I use arch

the computers at my highschool aren't so bad (core 2 duos with 4gb of ram) but they originally had windows xp, now they are running 7, and there is so much random useless programs installed that run on startup... so the computers are pretty slow, and take about 10 minutes to boot up.

Almost every site on the internet is blocked, even half of the websites that are supposed to be educational don't work

The schools network can't handle a more than probably 100 people, and there's 900 people in my school.  It slows down, and people always have a hard time logging in at the beginning of class because that's what everyone else is doing too.  there's always "No log on servers available"

The computers are really locked down... I can't even open the file explorer

I... HOW?!.... IT'S THAT EASY?!?! NO PROXIES, TETHERING, OR HIDE MY ASS.COM?!?!?! YOU LUCKY BASTARD!!

Unfortunately it really isn't that simple, as the IT guys for the district can see what you did immediately, and depending on what you do you can be arrested. but otherwise, it is that simple to break the system.

And this will work even with domains? If so, just to reconfirm...

- Start shutting down computer

- When preparing for shutdown (closing programs) I press the power button again

- FREEDOM

Basically, yes. I'm not kidding when I say that an elementary school kid found out how to do it. It has since spread to the entire district and people figured it out. I don't think that it has been patched yet, but I haven't heard anything happening relating to it.

Something, something, something, famous quote, computer specs, and stuff...

in the cafeteria, there's these two big tv's that kids turn on all the time with their phones.  whenever this happens, the administrators come out and stomp around the cafeteria, trying to find the culprit, and they can't ever fix the problem.  they usually just unplug the tv

Well, the PCs are built by Stone. Who the f*ck are Stone? Anyway, we were doing hardware in class and me and my friend who are like uber geeks compared to everyone else just like rested our heads against the desk because we knew more than the teacher about computers. She said that laptops and desktops have the EXACT same hardware. My friend ended up downloading Python cos he was so bored. We're now conspiring about DDOSing (nooby, I know) the school website. So yeah, Computing is sh*t.

We had this 1 computer in the computer lab (we only had 1, school of less than 500), that a previous student (whom me and my friends were friends with) that fed the computer craclers and gum by opening the CD drive, placing the crackers and chewed gum (sometimes in something similar to a crack sandwhich) in the CD tray, and slamming the tray shut whilst yelling "COMPUTER HUNGRY, COMPUTER WANT EAT".

Somehow, it never broke, but after he did that several times, that PC would no longer print to any printer in the computer lab, it would only print to this 1 printer in the main office of the school.

Also the computer teacher (who was also the head computer tech of the school, he was in charge of all the computers) showed us how to install Doom 95 to our student accounts in such a way that it wasn't deleted at midnight. We used to play it in the library during lunch, much to the horror of the EVIL BITCH of a librarian we had. (I mean this woman was a bitch, she would regularly prevent people from renting books that she felt were too graphic, which she wasn't really allowed to do).

I hated that school, the year I started there, I signed up for small engine repair, and of course the previous year had been the last year that class was available, but of course we could get the fucking football team new equipment each year, even though they always sucked. We got them back by doing doughnuts in the middle of the night before the homecoming game, in the middle of the field. They never figured out who did it.

My highschool does things right. They have decent wifi, computers are appropriate for the situation (Most of the time). Then we have a few problems.

  1. At the beginning of the school year, we had to create accounts to log into computers. My financial literacy teacher was going step by micro step showing people how to do it. There was this one kid who couldn't do it. And it wasn't something reasonable, he just typed in random shit into his password?
  2. I can access 10 porn sites and stream them to a T.V. Yet they block appropriate videos on youtube and block LTT and other websites that should not be blocked. I can also access www.tehurn.com/gayweed LOL
  3. The Macbooks in my english class have 512MB of RAM, Atom Processor and a stupid touchpad that doesn't have right click (Screw you Apple).
  4. When I tried to hook up 2 monitors to 1 computer during Financial Literacy (I got done early), the teacher thought I was going to blow up a computer
  5. Art rooms have Macs. Why can't the Tech Ed room or computer labs have Macs? Why aren't all the PCs in the building Windows.
  6. Not really related to the school, more to the students. A whole bunch of people forget to log of their computers so I delete everything on their H:Drive :D Teaches them.
  7. Internet Explorer. Not as bad, but still.
  8. Not all PCs have Microsoft Office. Only the ones in the Financial Literacy and Tech Ed lab have them The rest of the PCs for students have Open Office (Which isn't bad, but why?)
  9. People think I hacked the school when I use Google Gravity.
  10. All PCs have task manager disabled. What am I supposed to do if I need to force off a process?!?!?!?!?!
  11. I can delete everything on the Templates drive or school has if I wanted to. But I'm not that bad of a person so I don't do it.
  12. Finally, the computers in the Science labs have Pentium 4 processors and 256 MBs of RAM running Windows 2000, I freaking kid you not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
