Skip 300 desktop series and 800 desktop series.... I am pretty sure everyone knows what this means...

They can't count?

Even if they have a way better architecture around the corner, they can still name the product the 800 series...

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

Although it was expected that Nvidia Corp. would release its new GeForce GTX 800-series graphics cards for desktops this September and October, the company has decided to skip the GeForce 800 family for desktop PCs and jump straight to the GeForce 900 line of products.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/nvidia-to-skip-geforce-gtx-800-series-to-introduce-geforce-gtx-970-gtx-980-in-mid-september/

From my point of view it doesn't make any sense because if they launched the 800 series, then the 900 series would be more powerful, but this makes me think like they're cheating by changing the name and making it seem like it is more powerful

Not a first for NVIDIA though.

At a very wild guess; preparing for a new numbering standard when they finally get the next die shrink?

I'll bet this whole "Nvidia skipping 800 series" is a complete load of bullshit.

Why would they do this?

They already talked about 800-series GPUs, switching to 900 would be pointless.

As long as we don't get this shit

980ti

980 = 880ti

970 = 880 = 780ti

960ti = 870 = 780

960 = 860ti = 770 = 680

950ti = 860 = 760 = 670

950 = 850ti = 750ti = 660ti

Of course we all know they will, because Nvidia is the kind of rebranding.

It's already been rumored the 870 (now 970) will be pretty much the 780, and the 880 (now 980) a tad more powerful than the 780 Ti possibly.

that is not always true. Because when they change architechture they may find a way to make a big preformence bump. Remeber the jump from fermi to kepler?. the 680 had 3x times more cuda cores then the 580.

Just sell it or return it then lol. The cards will most likely come out by the end of this year. I'm kind of betting on it now, wayyy too many rumors that say September-November.

They perform almost the same

Um... no? The 750 Ti doesn't even outperform the 650 Ti Boost by much to my knowledge.
