GPU driver crashes in certain Games

Hi everyone,

I am getting pretty desperate here after having problems with my computer for months. I hope somebody has any ideas how to fix this.

Problem:

Computer runs fine on desktop or while streaming etc. but in certain games the GPU driver will keep crashing without any special reason.

Up until crashing the games run fine with normal FPS but once the driver crashes the Computer freezes. Most times I can continue playing without any problems after a few seconds.

Sometimes the game crashes and in rare occasions the whole computer resets (no bluescreen or anything).

What I have tried so far:

  • Updating GPU drivers obviously (multiple times over the last months)
  • Fresh Windows Installation
  • Resetting BIOS and deactivating DOCP profile on RAM
  • Deactivating Smart Access Memory

I even switched out some Hardware which improved the sitation but did not solve it:

  • Swtichted the Mainboard from ROG Strix X570-E to a ROG Strix B550-F after noticing the PCIe Slots were making trouble on the old Mainboard -> Fewer crashes since then
  • Switched out the 11 year old Dark Power Pro 10 750W power supply for a Dark Power 13 850 --> Now Fallout 4 runs without any problems, before it would crash almost immediatly

Still having problems in the following games: World of Warships, War Thunder, Helldivers 2

I am running out of ideas, please help ...

Not gonna lie, kind of confused about this issue as well. Just gonna throw out some ideas.

  • Check temperatures on the GPU (you can use MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z for this, among many others)
  • You could run a memory diagnostics test such as MemTest86 to see if this issue is caused by the RAM for any chance
  • Check Event Viewer for error messages around the time of the crashes
  • Updating DirectX and Visual C++ redistributables and making sure they are up to date
  • And of course, reaching out to some of the game channels you're having troubles with

Hopefully this helps!

I suggest doing a web search to see if other people are having the same or similar issue.

Thanks for the suggestions. At this point, any help is appreciated ...

  • Temperatures are all far in the green
  • MemTest is a good idea, I will give that a try
  • Event Viewer is as cluelss as myself. It only states that the system was shut down inproperly but does not state any specific reasons.
  • DirectX and C++ have been tried with multiple versions incl. the lastest, also no luck there

Already spend hours on web searches for both generic problems as well as game specific. Could not find any information that fits my problems. For Helldivers 2 there are some recommendations regarding graphic settings and other stuff I tried but nothing helped. For the other problematic games I couldnt find anything that helps either.

You'll have to search not only for the game issues but also your specific hardware.

Try more search engines and also check Microsoft's website. You might have to file a bug report. Check the games list of requirements.

Yeah a BIOS update might be needed or even a BIOS downgrade.

New Mainboard came with the latest BIOS. Tried multiple BIOS versions on the old mainboard, made no difference.

Windows as well as all games/drivers are up to date.

Scannow also did not change anything, but as I said I already did a whole fresh Windows Install and nothing changed.

No offense but please stop suggesting web searches, it is not helpful. As I already stated, I spent hours if not days searching the internet in every way possible, no matter how far fetched.

Game requierements? Except Helldivers 2 these are not new games and I used to play them on this exact maschine without any problems. I exceed all minimum requierments.

Being that way. You'll never get any help.

Saying "search the internet" is not help. Especially not if you repeat it 3 times ...

If you go to the doctor with headaches and he says "take some ibuprofen" with you answering "I already tried that" but he keeps saying "try some ibuprofen", would you feel like he helped you?

If you really are not finding any info on your specific issue. Do you think you will find it here? Contact the game's support and send them a error log bug report.

What would be the point of this forum if all information could already be found in other places of the internet? Imagine the only reply to every topic being: "Just try searching the internet". Is that your goal?
Game support makes no sense if the problem occurs in multiple games ...

If you cannot find your issue from a search engine. You probably won't find it here. Game support makes sense since the games are not working very well. This might be a Direct X issue.

I was thinking power issue as well, that's why switched to a new power supply. And it did improve the situation but not solve it.

And with a new mainboard and power supply there really isn't much left in case of power management other than voltage regulators etc. on the GPU itself. I am not sure if those could cause such a sporadic issue that's not tied to a specific load.

I did not use DDU but it was a completely fresh windows installation and the drive was wiped clean before.

Check Hard Disk Sentinel and check your drives for firmware updates.
