Will my 660ti 3gb handle well a PB278Q Monitor?

Nerykrugeer

Hey guys, I'm about to buy a new monitor for me, I use for games mostly, however this semester I will be working with a lot CAD, video editing and Photos. However I dont really know if my video card will handle well when I go play games, I dont play on ultra, Im very happy with high, or sometimes medium. Since the resolution will increase, it will demand more of the card, so I dont think it will change much if on the configuration on games(I hope it doesnt change much) or should I just buy a new graphics card when 800series come and then buy the monitor. (I prefer buying the monitor before I buy the graphics card, but if is going to have such a big effect I may try to wait for a 800 or just buy a 780 in this case and later buy the monitor)

Everyday Rig: CPU: Intel i7 3930k (stock), Graphics Card: Asus Strix GTX 1080 Advance Edition, Ram: 32Gb 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance, Storage: 128Gb Samsung 830, 2Tb Seagate Barracuda, CPU Cooler: H100i GTX Noctua F12 iPPC 2000RPM and Gentle Typhoon 1850RPM, Windows 10 Pro, Power Supply: Corsair HX1050 80Gold, Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Keyboard: Corsair K65 Cherry Red,  Mouse: Razer Mamba TE

I would buy a new graphics card, then buy the monitor. 1440p not really worth it on a 660 Ti. It can be done but you are going to have to do some serious lowering of settings. Which defeats the point of upgrading your resolution in the first place.

If you can wait, wait for the 880, if not just grab a 780 6GB or R9 290.

1440p with a 660ti?

Maybe at low-medium settings if you want to get at least 60fps.

Buy a new GPU first.

What if I buy the monitor and wait until 880 launches or get a 780 or 780ti depending on how much the price drop?

I dont play much while in school, however when I play I like the nice graphs anyways.

You can get the monitor, see if you enjoy playing your games at medium settings (which you wont) then when the 800 series comes out, buy a 870, 880, or 780/780ti depending on the prices.

If buying the monitor now will benefit your CAD, Video Editing and Photo work then go ahead and do it. But trying to play games on it will just be disappointing. Which is why I would wait until I had the appropriate graphics power to drive the monitor. Unless you feel outside of games it will be beneficial.

a think "one" R9 280 can do the job on 1440p (and is a 3GB card also, with 384 bits)

the 660 ti cannot fully utilize the 3GB of VRAM, which you'll probably need for 2.5K gaming.

It can.

Anyway, OP, it depends entirely on the games. *MOST* (yes, most) games will run at 1440p on high on a 660Ti. New and very demanding OR unoptimized games (like BF4/Crysis 3/Watch Dogs/etc) will need settings turned down, but LoL/DoTA/CoD (BO2 and below)/BF:BC2/Killing Floor/L4D2/CS:GO/Dark Souls 2/Borderlands 2/etc? No problems. Since you don't really care about supreme graphics, @Nerykrugeer, you'll probably do fine until you can get a better GPU.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

I was looking to buy another 660ti 3b, but they are so hard to find, and when you find, the bids are sometimes on the 200+ or 280+, so doesnt make me want to buy them, when if i put a little more i can get a 4gb 770 :/, but if you can test for me with one, and let me know how it handles it would be awesome =D.

yeah it would be nice to have for photo, video editing and CAD. it would help me to give a better final work than my basic 1080p.

Entry level for 1440p is an R9 280X or a GeForce GTX 780.

Yeah i dont really care about supreme graphics, at some point, yeah right now I do play BF4, but i left on medium just because I dont care about optimization as long I can play with fps above 60+ with space to breath. Yeah i will buy a better gpu at some point, but not now. on my head the monitor makes more sense to me, but its always nice to know what are the dificults I may have on gaming situations. but also since 800 series is coming I would like to have a nicer monitor also =D

true that for games I guess, maybe for what I will be doing mainly not that much, so I can maybe get a nice 880 later  or just a 780 when prices drop
