Damn, how much RAM do I need?!?!

Just upgraded my RAM because when I had 4GB, having around 20 tabs open (half of them in firefox, other half in chrome or so), it was throwing low memory errors at me and RAM usage was about 3.6GB. Now that I upgraded to 8GB, having about 25 tabs open (shouldn't be that much more demanding) and its still throwing low memory errors at me! I looked and RAM usage was 7.5GB?! What the hell? Are web browsers dynamically adjusting to how much RAM is in your system or something?

I use 32GB in my desktops. People seems to recommend 8GB for some reason. It is simply not enough.

Try maxing out your motherboard. I dont know if you will be able to put 32GB in that board.

It'll take up to 16GB, but I don't have money for more RAM at the moment lol

All of it

ALL the RAM

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I only have 8, and I don't have any problems with opening 20-30 tabs.

Would love to get more though because bawls

Hello

I would though most people suggest 8 gb i would have to disagree. I personally prefer 16. The extra head room is really nice. You can get good 16 gb kits on newegg for a very reasonable price. It also depends on what you are doing. If you are like me and have 80 tabs open when doing school work or work in general The extra ram will be vary helpful. However, if you are just playing games and have 10 tabs open on a busy day 8 should be plenty.

Hope this helps :)

There's no way in hell your PC needs that much ram to hold some tabs and your OS processes. Something else is wrong here

My machine won't jump over 4GB unless I start running games and other programs. But never with browsers.

Chrome on with around 10 tabs open (mostly just forum pages and one YouTube tab for music) is taking up about 5GB on it's own.

Well you have both chrome AND firefox open there,

How about sticking to just one browser, eh?

I use Firefox, 20 tabs open and a bunch of extensions, uses less than 1GB. (600 MB)

Chrome is a RAM hog, about time you realized it.

I have 8 and with a ton of apps running and tabs open, I'm still nowhere near maxing it out.

Why do you need 20+ tabs open? And what kind of websites do you have open in those tabs? Must be high in media content/images etc...

Your google chrome memory usage looks abnormally high. 1.6gigs in just one of the chrome processes?! Chome tends to be a mem hog these days, but that looks quite high to me.

I have 8 gigs, and sometimes it's 95% used, but for some weird reason everything keeps working fine, it's after 2-3 hours it starts to swap, if i keep pushing it.

As long as your swap cache doesn't fill up, you're fine.

Also, maybe restart your pc at least once a week, i'm not suprised you have your memory filled up like that after 8 days.

Increasing your swap size can fix it, there is probably almost no swap to catch the ram overflow.

Only have 8GB in my laptop and most of the time when I've just got 12ish tabs open in chrome, and skype open I sit at 50-60% ram usage.

I have to agree: browsers are just horrible things and extremely poor pieces of software AND if you take into account crappy plugings and poorly designed website it gets bad very quickly.

Learn to use bookmarks you really never need to have more than maybe 2 or 3 tabs open at a single time. Also if you have a smartphone take advantage of it's push notification system to keep facebook, twitter, youtube, etc. Closed until you get a notification worth checking.

1.6gb for one Chrome process seems rather abnormal.

If you find that the total amount of memory usage doesn't match up to the amount indicated by the processes tab, try running RAMMap:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/ff700229.aspx

If you find a bunch is 'Driver Locked' then you have a leaky driver that's absorbing a lot of memory, I've had this issue before with a bad NIC driver. This explained why I had 15.9GB used of 16GB despite Task Manager only listing about 3GB of total process memory usage.

Glad I got 16GB when ram was cheap... $79! Only part that has lasted me through build revamps. :D

I hardly pass 6gb usage on my pc when browsing the web with ~30-40 tabs. What you fail to see is the breakdown of ram usage. Some will be actively used but some will be 'cached'. Windows will try and fill ram to the max with cache as much as it can to smoothen your experience by storing some of the cache on your system memory so it dosen't need to read the disk for cache. The cached memory will be made available to programs when it's needed but will be used for cache when no other programs are taking advantage of it.
