Linus called adblock users scummy

jhen

Watch the stream. I didn't even know how to remove it. It was kinda funny. I've never installed AdBlock on my PC

you do know that you can simply disable AdBlock on certain websites and on YouTube i use it to block annoying ads and viruses that they harbour.

i have it disabled on this website now that i remembered to do so i forgot to do that and on YouTube where i watch your videos and TekSyndicates Website.

I think the thread was good

I use Adblock and never whitelisted anything for that matter, i can see where Linus is coming from since.. their revenue comes from Ads.
Imagine you sell a service without being paid, it is kinda sad.

Since for the first time ever i saw ads on this forum and it isn't particularly intrusive, i'll definitely whitelist from now on.
P.S: Would still keep adblock on Youtube until i can find a way to display those 30 second nonsense lol, i'm fine with pop ups, but not un-skippable intrusive videos.

I white list wherever possible, but the YouTube ads that autoplay are intolerable. I like to open a bunch of videos in tabs and then work my way through them, but when I've got 10+ tabs open with videos autoplaying with the sound on that gets old really fast.  If the ads didn't autoplay I'd be all for white listing YouTube.

If Linus and other YouTubers would provide alternate funding options, Patreon, Indiegogo, Kickstarter, etc. I would gladly contribute to those. Also, when YouTubers have Twitch subscriptions enabled I'll use those, sometimes even if I don't usually watch their live streams.  Like Totalbiscuit, I subscribe to his Twitch, but I don't watch Hearthstone or Starcraft, I do it because I block his ads on YouTube.  I know a lot of YouTubers don't like to directly ask for money from fans, but they need to get over it if they want to get paid.  Hopefully a lot of YouTubers will make use of the upcoming Tip Jar feature and this adblock "scumminess" will end.

I'm a thief and a scumbag who pirates movies games and music despite buying a few, I use adblock everywhere because I don't like ads and it's too easy to just get rid of them and rest easy because thousands don't do it and it feeds you well enough.

I don't care what words you use to describe me because I'm probably all of them in one way or another, however I do like you guys and if I saw you being mugged in an alleyway I'd come step in despite the danger out of the sense of duty that your content and personalities have created in me, that's got to be worth something at least.

Thanks!  :D

Joking aside, why should people be forced to look at adverts just because they're on a website? If I'm reading a newspaper or magazine I can turn the page and choose not to read an advert. When I watch TV I can mute the sound or go and make a drink. If I'm at the cinema I can talk to my friends or play a game on my phone during the adverts.

Not sure what kind of ads you guys get, but for me I only get those skip-able ones, and the ones that can appear throughout the video. Never had pop-ups and such, but don't modern browsers have the ability to block pop-ups?

I never use adblock and if I did I would never enable it on Youtube or Linustechtips or any website I supported.

And for someone like me, who has barely anything to give.  Baring with advertisements is fine and I think of it as sort of support LinusTechTips.

If you get adblock you will understand. It blocks everything from the small "if you love us...." banner with a hyperlink to linus's affiliates on the homepage of the forum (along with most ads in this genre from just about every site) as well as video ads more (like on youtube, and even on crunchyroll if you like anime, but hulu will still make you wait the duration even if the ad is blocked) and much more

it gets rid of helpful things sometimes, but can be very helpful for blocking out useless annoying crap. It can be really great and get in the way at the same time; use with care.

Example of good: less annoying video ads that start playing off a random web page and are really loud and surprise the crap out of you, etc

BAd: takes out things like the link to linus's affiliates on the homepage (it can remove helpful things that "seem like ads"), and denies content creators their dues (linus for instance.)

Also, you must not be going to any really annoying websites..... it gets bad sometimes..... but these can often be somewhat "scummy" websites to quote linus lol. But then again, I think I have gotten scared by some random loud video ad on huffington post before...... still not the best site. cqts

nevertheless, navigating the internet without adblock would be a very big pain for me.

I must settle in before I decide to disable it.

I usually dont unless i have to.

I used, and still use AdBlock, but I whitelist the websites I visit frequently and enjoy. I don't find YouTube ads intrusive, long or generally annoying, but I noticed some people mention pop-ups which never occurred to me on YouTube.

I don't mind banner ads so much as I dislike video ads. I know it's scummy of me, and I accept that. However, I'll be happy to scroll through pages that have banner ads on them, but when I decide to watch a Linus video, I don't want sit through Video ad>Short intro>Ad integration, THEN video.

Yeah that never happened for me either, and I actually see some good youtube ads once in a blue moon..... Most of them skippable.

Seems like a lot of people are just set in their ways.

Time to put my social conscience hat on!

I fully support Linus' right to call people who use AdBlock scummy, in the same way that people who use AdBlock have the right to block adverts on his content if they so choose. It is interesting to see that some people seem offended and others don't, in my experience people are more offended when the thing they have been accused of is actually something they think might be a bit true but won't admit to.

Let me qualify and say that I don't use AdBlock, I have very little problem with massive full page ads and pop-ups, but then I don't spend a vast amount of time browsing hardcore pornography (only a little bit of time, I'm trying to cut back). The excuses (from the people that feel the need to justify their actions) make for excellent reading. I especially liked the 'plenty of people don't use it so it's fine that I do' argument, massive amount of selfishness right there, I love it.

I understand that it takes an almost superhuman effort for me to move my cursor over to a 'skip-ad' button on YouTube or to close down a small banner ad that pops up at the bottom of the video, perhaps others feel that they are unable to summon such an effort. Maybe they can't face the prospect of not paying attention to a 20 second non-skip able ad. Or maybe they are the sort of person who just doesn't feel they should in some way pay for things they consume. It's the same attitude that leads people to not pay for computer games or films or music, a sense of entitlement, 'why should I have to pay for that it's expensive', X company has loads of money anyway! Maybe I just shouldn't pay next time I go into a shop to buy something, or maybe I just won't pay my taxes this year because hey, why should I have to pay for law enforcement, or having my bins emptied or anything! Yeah, fight the man!

LMG produces content that people then consume, just like shows on TV or anything like that, on TV you pay either through a subscription model or through having ad-breaks during shows, these are what allow the companies that produce content to keep on producing content, what are LMG supposed to do if they don't make enough revenue? I bet people would get all mad if they had to cut staff or reduce the quality of their content. Maybe they should switch to a subscription only model or maybe they should just all do it for free! Because you know, all the people who use AdBlock and get offended all totally provide a service for free when they go to work. They refuse to be paid because they think that being paid for providing some kind of service is an outmoded concept, or maybe their employer uses 'RemunerationBlock' because they believe that people should do stuff just because they love doing it, for the good of society etc.

It all reminds me of a line from what I think was one of the many Pirates of the Caribbean movies 'Take everything, give nothing back!'

At the end of the day, using something like AdBlock is a scummy move and it's fun to watch some people get all mad when they get reminded of that fact because they use it and secretly feel a bit bad about it. Sure, some people don't care and props to them, they probably know it's a scummy move and have accepted that and moved on, just like when people call me a dick or incredibly handsome, I accept it and move on because it's true. It's the people who are dicks and know it but don't admit it to themselves who get all mad when they get called out on it.

But then what do I know, I'm just some idiot on an internet forum, who really cares what I think, even I barely do.

Have a nice day!

I will admit that I use Adblock. Because performance issues.

But when it comes to support people, i do disable it for certain websites, like Ltt.

Adblock users, you guys have an option to disable for certain websites.

The adverts that annoy me the most are the ones where the webpage content is in the middle and the rest of the screen is an advert for a game or movie. Usually it is a hyperlink to the site of the product, so if I want to make sure my browser has the focus and I click this part of the page I get taken to their advert. Annoying.

I see this thread is still going. Read the first few pages.

The word scummy was ill-chosen.

But the simple fact ramains that if everyone blocked the ads in my content Linus Tech Tips wouldn't exist. Period.

Those suggesting that I complain to Google... Do you think I can just call up Eric Schmidt and let him know I don't like the way they implement ads on YouTube? I laughed out loud.

YouTube isn't perfect but it's my best shot at running a viable business here so I can pay my employees and feed my family, so that's what I use. Those of you who opt to consume the content without supporting it, fine you're not "scummy". Come up with your own word for it ;)

I agree. I have now also turned off my ad block(on youtube at least). To be honest, it was quite selfish of me to use. Just so that I wasn't bothered by ads. Not thinking about the people who actually have to make money with those ads. And in Linus's case, support a family!! Of course there's still sponsors but I dont believe you can run a company from only sponsor deals (no experience).

I will therefore not use ad block on youtube. (but its still useful for other sites ;))

Why don't you all just shut up and keep your opinions to yourself. If you use Adblock, keep using it and enjoy ad free content.

If you don't use it, keep doing that and feel good that you are helping linus out.

I know linus would make abit more money if everyone stopped using Adblock, but I also know that if he wasn't getting enough money he would stop making vids and definatly stop hiring new staff. So I think he's doing alright as he is, and although that extra bit of as money would be nice for linus, he doesn't despiratly need it.

So just stop arguing and go back to doing what you do.
