Now that I think about it, they've probably used something newer than original AK (AK-74 maybe, which uses 5.56mm cartridge). But still, it's a transport plane, an it probably doesn't have a good armor, so a couple successful shots into fuel tanks... idk really

Not explosive, but 7.62*39 comes in armor-piercing-incendiary variant, which (if my information is correct) can punch through armor up to 7mm thick (from 200m) and ignite whatever's behind it. Or maybe they've just had an IGLA.
